Amon Amarth Reveal Five Awesome Things You Didn’t Know About Vikings

As Revolver writer Chris Krovatin points out in his review of Amon Amarth’s new album, Surtur Rising (read it here), if the hirsute Swedish death-metal outfit has one simple message that they are trying to get across, it’s that “the Vikings were awesome.” In keeping with that, the band sent us this list of particularly badass Viking trivia…after you read it, enter to win an Amon Amarth prize pack featuring a collectible 5.5?-tall action figure of the Norse fire god Surtur!

American metalheads
“The Vikings were the first European people to discover North America. They called it Vinland. Viking settlements have been found in Newfoundland off the Canadian coast.”

To Russia with love
“Swedish Vikings founded the country of Russia. These Vikings were called Rus, and that’s where Russia got its name.”

Istanbul on parade
“The Vikings often traveled the rivers of today’s Russia to Constantinople—today’s Istanbul. There they were employed by the emperor as his bodyguards, since they were considered to be fierce warriors and also loyal and trustworthy.”

Today is the day
“Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday all have names after Viking gods. Wednesday means ‘Odin’s day,’ Thursday means ‘Thor’s day,’ and Friday means ‘Frey’s day.’”

I’m on a boat
“The Viking ship, the longboat, was the fastest and most advanced ship of its day. No other ship existing in any part of the world during the era could outrun a true longboat.”

Also, wherever they sailed they did more then loot and pillage…they married in the local population and established trade…repeat they interbred with locals as far as Constantinople so suck on that Neo Nazis. True Vikings weren’t racially pure.

oh, come on… thor, odin and frey weren’t exclusively viking gods, the vikings shared a common background with all the germanic people, the saxons worshipped the same gods with slightly different names (odin was called wedan among other names, that’s why wednesday), that’s why the weekdays have these names in english, it doesn’t have anything to do with the goddamned vikings…

btw latin countries (italy, spain etc)  have their weekdays named after roman gods, and the romans identified their gods with the germanic gods, as if they were the same under different names (check out interpretatio romana to learn more about it), so one can say the entire europe whorshipped the same gods…

amon amarth is an embarrassement for the vikings, they are clowns (it seems being a clown these days is “awesome”, so I guess they are doing great getting their stupid message across), but they could at least check their information before publishing such crap…
