Carnifex Vocalist Scott Lewis' Tips For Staying Healthy On Tour

San Diego deathcore outfit Carnifex—who dropped their third album, Hell Chose Me (Victory), last year—have proven themselves as road warriors since their formation in 2005. And we say “warriors” because life on tour can be a total battle of attrition on the mind, body, and soul. So we asked vocalist Scott Lewis how the Carnifex dudes keep fit.

Heavy lifting
“We like to tour without a van or bus. Instead, we carry our equipment and belongings from city to city. It’s the healthiest and most cost effective form of travel.”

“If you’re clean, you look good. If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good. That being said, showering is definitely a major concern on the road. Moist toilettes, wet naps, Axe, and frequent cat baths are vital to stay clean.”

Money is flesh
“Keeping your wallet as fat as possible is a great way to stay happy on the road. Eating dollar-menu items at our favorite fast food restaurants is not only beneficial for our wallets, but also for our arteries.”

Fight or fall
“One of our favorite ways to get exercise on the road is to spar each other daily.”

Laugh tomorrow
“Laughing regularly is crucial to staying healthy on the road. Did you know laughter can lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones, and promote a general sense of well-being?”

Regular people
“Not having a regular eating, sleeping, or exercise schedule really keeps us going during a grueling tour. But seriously, trying to keep a regular eating and sleeping schedule is very valuable to your health on the road.”

All in the family
“Staying in touch with our friends and family is super-important for staying sane in a confined van while traveling. Being able to talk to our loved ones definitely helps to keep our heads on straight.”
