Steve Austin and his project Today Is the Day, with its ever-morphing lineup, are well known for creating some of the most uncompromisingly hostile, abrasive, and disturbing music ever pressed. For album No. 9, Austin is joined by members of New York City noise-rockers Wetnurse, and the results range from blasters like “Wheelin’” and “The Devil’s Blood,” full of catchy, punkish riffs and animalistic wails, and haunting pseudo-ballads like “Remember to Forget.” It’s all cacophonous and creepy enough for longtime fans and yet streamlined enough that, for perhaps the first time ever, casual listeners might be able to survive the onslaught.
