Review: Toxic Holocaust – Conjure and Command

Rated:

4/5

On their fourth full-length album, Portland’s Toxic Holocaust prove themselves one step above the retro-thrash trend. Conjure and Command is a fearsome blast of blackened speed metal, comparable to the better works of Bathory and Aura Noir. Frontman Joel Grind has never sounded meaner, his spewed blasphemies and death-machine guitar tone possessing a hateful venom only hinted at on his band’s previous efforts. Opener “Judgment Awaits You” is easily the group’s most brutal song, and the furious riffage on “Red Winter” and “I Am Disease” is unmatched in the throwback thrash subgenre. A commanding effort, indeed. CHRIS KROVATIN
