Review: Yob - Atma

On their fifth album, Eugene, Oregon power-doom colossus Yob have somehow tightened their telekinetic bond, maintaining sucker-punch grooves in the stickiest, most viscous sludgefuck quicksand ever. For 16 minutes at a time, Yob lurch along the line between of joy and agony, turning waves of pure detuned gunk into unlikely crust-rock anthems—if you’re into pumping your fist very slowly. The biggest leap forward however is frontman Mike Scheidt, whose anguished yowl increasingly sounds like St. Vitus’s Wino Weinrich being waterboarded, and whose guitar is one step away from industrial machinery.
