Hear Pelican, 5ive Members Conjure Post-Metal Utopia on INTRCPTR's New Song

Riff-worshipping "D.I.W.I.W.Y.L." more than lives up to its players' stellar past output

INTRCPTR may be adverse to the use of vowels, but the band loves riffs — which shouldn't be surprising considering that their lineup includes Larry Herweg of Pelican and Ben Carr from 5ive. Instrumentally-focused and very much what fans would expect based on those two players' forward-thinking better-known projects, the outfit leans on steamroller-heavy guitar-riffing, indulging their progressive tendencies without sounding noodly, and bringing impressive variations on a theme to propel their mammoth sludge/post-metal sound. The result marks the intersection of the more violent Pelican tune-age and the thunderous approach of 5ive's gnarly guitar work. Check out the band's latest single, "D.I.W.I.W.Y.L," which makes its debut here today. It's the second song to be released from INTRCPTR's two-track EP, II, out on Bandcamp now.

Herweg offered his thoughts on the new offering, stating that "on the first track, 'Dusted,' you hear the band firing on all cylinders and driving full-speed ahead. Where as in 'D.I.W.I.W.Y.L,' the second song on II, you hear the band pull back and sit in a nice mid-tempo groove, allowing Ben's riffs to breathe a little more."
