Hear WINDHAND singer's haunting new solo song "Family Annihilator"

Dorthia Cottrell offers up lead single from upcoming 'Death Folk Country' LP

Dorthia Cottrell is best known as the singer of Virginian sludge-grunge titans Windhand, but she also makes much less speaker-destroying music under her own name. Shit might not be so heavy sonically, but it's heavy AF emotionally. Take for instance, "Family Annihilator," the mournful, acoustic lead single off Cottrell's forthcoming second solo album, the aptly titled Death Folk Country. The song arrived today (February 28th) along with an eerie music video, both conjuring a swampy, suffocating Southern Gothic vibe. Watch and listen above.

"This album to me is about painting a picture of a place where my heart lives," Cottrell commented of the LP. "The title Death Folk Country is partly me describing a genre that fits the sound — but it's also meant to be taken as a Naming, a coronation of the world inside me. Death Folk Country is the music and also the land where the music takes place, and the two have always been inextricable from each other."

Death Folk Country is due out April 21st via Relapse Records.
