Watch Metallica Deliver Spirited Rendition of A-ha's "Take on Me"

Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo put metal spin on Eighties pop staple in Norway

Metallica stopped off in Oslo, Norway, last night (May 2nd) amid the closing European leg of their WorldWired Tour. As always, the thrashers' performance found guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo honoring a famous local artist during the band's mid-set break by performing a short cover (otherwise known as a "doodle," to borrow the band's preferred phrasing). This time around, the rockers nodded to Oslo new-wave band A-ha with a spirited take on the synth-poppers iconic "Take on Me."

"Take on Me" joins a long list of reinterpretations from Hammett and Trujillo. Noteworthy covers delivered over the past few months include a fiery take on Celtic Frost's "Procreation (of the Wicked)" — performed in tribute to the extreme-metal pioneers' late co-founder Martin Ain in Switzerland — as well as renditions of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" (in Birmingham) and Oasis' "Don't Look Back in Anger" (in Manchester). Elsewhere on the trek, in Switzerland, Hammett and drummer Lars Ulrich took a tour of CERN, the world's largest particle physics lab.

Metallica's European tour wraps up next week in Helsinki, Finland, with a North American arena tour to follow in autumn; check out the full itinerary here. The group recently dropped its remastered reissue of The $5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited.
