Crunkcore group Brokencyde are releasing their new album, Guilty Pleasure (BreakSilence), on November 8, which will be available on iTunes here. You can get your first taste of the album right here on their new song, “Still the King!!!” The group’s Se7en fills us in on the song below. Let us know what you think of it in the comments.
REVOLVER What’s this song about?
SE7EN It’s the follow-up to a song we did called “I’m The King” off our “DJ Sku Presents brokeNCYDE Vol. 1” mixtape. It’s more or less about being on top of your game and never backing down from our thrown we’ve built. King shit! “Still The King” meaning we’re the best at what we do. We’re still out to conquer the world! We just shot a video for the song that’s gonna be sick. Scott Hansen directed it and we can’t wait to unleash it on the world. It cuts right to the core of what Brokencyde fans wanna hear from us. On the rest of the album, we took some real chances, incorporating different styles, a little more hip-hop and dance. Whatever it is, it’s still us, from the nuts, and people are really gonna dig it. If you like old Brokencyde, this album will blow you away. I also think that the people who weren’t fans of our old stuff are gonna get into it—but we didn’t make it for them. If they wanna jump on board with us, right on. If not, we got our true fans and that’s all we need.
Which part of it did you come up with first?
Came up with the hook first. I originally wrote this song as a rap song to an entirely different beat. Heard this new beat and thought screaming those same lyrics on the hook would sound amazing. So we did and it came out sick! This song is definitely for the haters out there. That the fact is, we’re still here bitches! Our kingdom is expanding and were always gonna wear the crown in crunk-core even if we experiment with other styles. Like I said before, even when we work in other styles, it’s still the four of us. It’s kind of like putting on a different pair of shoes—just because I look a little different, they still move with the same swagger and attitude.
Was this an easy song to write?
Woke up one night from a crazy dream and couldn’t go back to sleep so looked at our Facebook real quick. Some people were saying their crunk skills had surpassed ours, which instantly inspired me. I played a hard hitting beat I had laying around and came up with a really cool idea for a song that would show them that we still got it. Wrote the hook and it pretty much came naturally from there. Recording it was a breeze seeing that we’d already recorded part of it in the past. Writing and recording can be a really bizarre process. Some of the best material just pours out without any effort at all and that’s how “Still The King” was with the lyrics. It just all seemed to flow as if it was already written for me and I was just the vehicle that it was sent through. [Laughs] Brokencyde coming to you through the cosmos! And there are other times where you spend so much effort and energy trying to get certain lyrics right or sing lines of a song over and over and over again, and it never gels. What started out as a good idea becomes this mess that doesn’t bear any resemblance to where you started or where you thought you were going with it. Even though I had a different idea for the way the song was going to sound musically, once we had the direction, it moved fast.
What sort of feedback have you gotten on this song so far?
Showed some friends and family and everyone seem to love it so far! Still have yet to hear from our fans but I’m sure everyone will dig it. It’s a grungy song with powerful vocals over a really intense beat. What’s not to like? We’re really proud of the whole album and, to be honest with you, we don’t care what people think. This is our art and we stand behind it. You know, a lot of people like to talk shit about us, so those people are gonna hate it no matter what. We didn’t make the record for them—the ones who think we’re not a real band, that we suck, or whatever. We are real, so get used to it. Millions of YouTube views, 500,000 Facebook friends and tons of packed shows that prove that there are a lot of people love we do. For the people who love us, we’re still the kings! That’s not an ego thing. Just sayin’!
