Exclusive: Four Year Strong Debut “Just Drive”

As previously reported, Four Year Strong are releasing their new album, In Some Way, Shape, or Form. (Decaydance/Motown), on November 8. But you can hear the new song “Just Drive” for the first time right here. Vocalist-guitarist Dan O’Connor fills us in on the song below. Let us know what you think of the track in the comments.

REVOLVER What’s this song about?
DAN O’CONNOR
“Just Drive” is about being on the brink of disaster, and just saying “fuck it” and living your life like there’s no tomorrow. We’ve all been in situations where it feels like everything is collapsing around you, and this song is about knowingly not giving a shit and realizing you’re in control of your own life.

Which part of it did you come up with first?
The chorus was the first part written, more specifically the melody and chord structure. I came up with it in bed after waking up in the morning. The lyrics came later that day. Lyrically the inspiration came from times in life when everything feels like it’s spiraling out of control, but then I realize no matter what happens as long as I live life without dwelling on anything, or hold myself back, then I’ll have no regrets. I wrote the song with the visual of the world ending and getting in a car and driving to out run it, never looking back and still remembering to have fun even though the demise of the planet it right behind you. I thought it was a fun way to get my point across.

Was this an easy song to record?
Recording this song wasn’t easier or harder than any other song. It came with its own issues, just like every other song. But was a ton of fun to do. It’s one of the first mid-tempo songs we’ve written and it’s always a fun challenge to change up the way you write. We wanted to make sure that every song on this record had a new element for our band, we really wanted to challenge ourselves and our fans.

What sort of feedback have you gotten on this song so far?
Everyone we’ve played this song for seems to really enjoy it. I hope everyone likes listening to the song and much as we enjoyed writing and recording it. We recently filmed a video for it too and can’t wait for everyone to see it!

not really digging this. i still have hope for the album though. out of all the released songs stuck in the middle is the best and even so it’s pretty mediocre. i still have hope for the album though.

I thought this was a punk band

  • Luke

I’m stoked for this album, but I’m also worried. I’ve got your back, FYS, please do not let me down.

This is different, from their previous stuff but they’re still so good!

    they’ve always been pop-punk-core

  • Jd

Hope to have tracks that sounds like the album ROD but, I’m sure the album will be awesom

this sounds like one of those cheesy christian bands like skillet and shit…  Please punk the fuck out of the rest of the album

  • FrankDaTank

Kicking Josh out was a bad idea… Sounds like you’ve gone a bit soft…

    • Aldred09

David Bendeth, their new producer, is notorious for calming bands down

I have hope, but am also disappointed. I know bands tend to mature and tweek their sound as a result, but to do a complete 180° and drop all the elements that made them great to begin with sucks. I guess you have to make your money somehow. I will still buy the album in the hopes that it will grow on me, but if not… well I’ll leave it at that for now. I just feel that they were growing with every album prior to this one and all of a sudden they took five steps back.

  • tomM

they didnt kick out josh…. he left to do vocals in his own band….

    • DShwav

      they kicked him out dude…

    • Aldred09

no, they kicked him out. read their articles and interviews. they said the new sound didnt really call for his screams or keys

  • #justfuckingdrive

omg so in love with this song

  • burning at both ends

Liking the new album so far very 90′s rockish which isn’t bad at all! and let’s face it was inevitable that they were going for this sound

  • wut

    wassup Deftones

  • Farfromband

not liking the new music at all guys you totally changed your style and sold your self’s out listen to the last 2 albums by 4 years then try to tell me that this song just drive sounds like 4 years

    • Aldred09

they are doing what they feel is right in their lives, plus they have a new producer. if they made the same music everytime it would get old. change is necessary. they haven’t sold out at all. people on the internet clearly dont understand what selling out is. selling out is when its no longer about the music. its when it becomes about the money. FYS is playing whats in their hearts and to me thats more respectable than anything else and no one should ask anything more of them

you have no clue what they have in their heart guy what @farfromband is referring to is the fact they’re making this pussy ass radio friendly stuff instead of that classic FYS staying in the same artistic vein doesn’t make you make the same album.  Someone doesn’t understand PUNK.  It’s not personal but step the music up

        • Jonbradyiii

dude you’re a Blayne…. do you play or write music??? are you in a band full time??? if so the stuff you produce is what puts food on your table, isn’t it every bands dream to make it big? isn’t that why you make music so others can enjoy what you have to say and write? Stop being so negative and suck a FAT COCK! hahaha  apparently you don’t understand that you’re a FAG. hahaha “someone doesn’t understand punk.”

          • FroYo44

the fact that you resort to gay slurs demonstrates your blatant immaturity, and as such, you are most likely the demographic that they are targeting with their new album: jocular teenage boys afraid of real punk but willing to play a song loud. I apologize for the run-on but, no a punk band’s dream isnt to make it big, that would make them the antithesis to punk. and i quite enjoyed their past work, as did many others, judging by their headlining tours, so i can deduce that they were plodding along fine. this shift is both unnecessary and grating to the ears, cliched radio rock at its finest.

    • musicslife

go fuck yourself just cause they changed their style a bit doesn’t mean they sold out

FYS no matter what I will still love you guys. The lyrical content has stayed strong but what has happened instrumentally to you guys. I’m concerned. You guys aren’t as heavy and josh is a missing element. He made you guys a little from every other pop-punk band.

Fantastic still as the new songs have been. <3 I love that they're exploring new techniques and styles. You don't want a band to make the same record twice. Can't wait for November!

  • Jonbradyiii

you guys rock!!!! Can’t wait for the new album it’s going to be so so so so so sick!!! when are you coming to UTAH again??? keep up the good work.

I really enjoy the new music. You did a great job at broadening your musical horizons, while everyone else is too ignorant to understand that.

  • scrum

I love FYS and I’m all about music progression and bettering yourself as a band, but this song is f**king trash. Not one part of it is exciting or entertaining. Imagine standing in the crowd while they play this song, pull up your pillows and blankets folks.

  • Zerom91

What happened to Enemy of the World? That album was perfection. The new songs are fine…they just dont make you excited anymore.

    • Mattbibeault

Exactly what I think. They are so far from Enemy and even further than Rise of Die Trying.

Nice song…not exactly a typical FYS party material, though…
I can imagine myself listening to it while driving or chilling or something, but as someone already mentioned, this one would be boring live…

  • Thekillers27

DOES NOT SOUND LIKE YOU GUYS.

    • Little_kurt_1994

it completely sounds like them, did u not hear their voices? maybe the guitar? or drums? it’s still four year strong

I can’t believe I am reading people say they would be mad to hear them play this live.  Not every song has to be a fast circle pit song.  Personally, I enjoy a nice breather from time to time.  Great song guys.  Keep up the great work.

  • Little_kurt_1994

Why does everyone complain about a band not sounding just like one of their other albums? What’s the fun in doing the same stuff? I personally love the change in their music because it keeps me guessing “what’s next?”. I haven’t found one song I’ve disliked on any album. Music is art, and u can’t paint the same painting over and over, so don’t expect them to be the same band on every album. It’s progression. Love every album, can’t wait to buy this album and support the band.

Totally agree with @d8498d38b42af1304c650a2719b34904:disqus : every band has to move, because life is moving all the time, we grow up and change, and that’s what makes us so special!!
