Exclusive: Sun and Sail Club, Featuring Members of Fu Manchu and Kyuss, Premiere New Song, “Held Down”

Rock band Sun and Sail Club features Bob Balch of Fu Manchu (guitar/vocoder vocals), Scott Thomas Reeder of Kyuss/The Obsessed (production/bass), and Fu Manchu drummer Scott Reeder. The group plans to release their debut album, Mannequin, November 19 on Satin Records Recordings. In anticipation, the band has teamed up with Revolver to premiere the track, “Held Down.” Check out the song below and let us know what you think in the comments.

“Overall, this record is heavy and dark. It’s Inspired by Devo, Voivod, Kraftwerk, Torche, and Slayer as much as it’s inspired by Aswad, Joe Pass, and Wes Montgomery,” says Balch. “The riffs are heavy and the vocoder vocals are full of harmonies. I wanted a super heavy groove that would support angelic vocal harmonies. I think we have achieved that.”

Holy crap! That’s sick. It’s like Kraftwork meets desert rock. Way to go boys! Two Reeders. Ha!

  • Andrea Van Cleef

Oh please, don’t tell me we’re gonna get a 21st century “Trans” from the Desert. The groove is rad, btw, and I think I could stand the vocoder if you keep it to one track only… Please tell me that the other tracks are just like this one, MINUS the vocoder. :)

Yes! Transformer Man is an excellent song… WITHOUT the vocoder!

It didn’t work for Neil in 1982… and… it still ain’t working! It’s too bad the music is so damn great!

I wasn’t sure about the vocoder when I heard about them using it, but now that I hear it I love it. I can’t really say I’ve ever heard a band like this. I’ll buy this for sure. Kyuss>QOTSA.
