Love and Death, Featuring Brian “Head” Welch, Premieres New Song “Chemicals”

Former Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch has started a new band called Love and Death. They will be releasing a five-song EP titled Chemicals on April 24, but you don’t have to wait until then to hear it. Check out the EP’s title track below, and read Head’s thoughts on the song below the stream. Let us know what you think of it in the comments.

REVOLVER What’s this song about?
BRIAN “HEAD” WELCH To me, “Chemicals” brings a few different subjects to mind: chemical warfare, battling depression, being trapped in the insanity of drug addiction. I’m sure people will get different things out of it.

Which part of it did you come up with first?
It was a team effort with Jason Rauch, Mark Holman, and my boys in Love and Death. The music came first from me throwing down the basic idea on GarageBand. Then Jason and Mark came up with the title and chorus idea, “Chemicals.”

Was this an easy song to record?
The music for this one was pretty easy. It came together rather quickly. The vocals were kind of a struggle for me, but I got through it.

What sort of feedback have you gotten on this song so far?
It’s been really good and positive. I’ve yet to hear anything negative. We’re pretty stoked on the reaction. the Song is solid and the video makes it even better. It’ll be coming out soon.

  • Mike

I cant wait to hear it, I think it’s so amazing how much of yourself you put in to every song. Thank You Brian and all of you make up Love and Death. God Bless!

  • Jbstank

Why can’t you just go play with Korn, dude? Seriously…what a waste. You guys are not whole w/o each other.

    • Dont mess with Welch

man shut up, since he has left korn, he has not been on drugs, he has become more of a father, and korn needs him, he doesnt need korn, there’s a difference

      • Jbstank

Whatever is going on is his personal life is not my concern. This is about music. I miss Korn, the old-school Korn. Nothing they have done since, or anything Head has done since has been even close to the output of the original line-up of Korn. They need each other, both ways.

        • systemrevenant

Selfish much? Head will go back to korn when they stop selling out and start singing about something that matters.

        • http://www.facebook.com/ben.schlichter Ben Schlichter

You…. Never bothered reading about Brian’s time in Korn, did you? The drug usage, the poor fatherhood, ect?

There’s a reason he’s not with them anymore. Brian, as does the current lineup of Korn, have a life outside of music. If being in the band was self-destructive for him, then he shouldn’t be involved in making music with them. Love & Death’s message is far more powerful and useful than Korn ever was.

          • Jbstank

I’m familiar with his past struggles. Jon is sober now as well. It’s a shame they can’t make music together again, because their collective ouput was much, much better than anything either Korn, or Head has produced since. The metal world is missing out because of that, I think. I guess I’m just nostalgic for the deeper, darker days of Korn. It’s just sad when some of these bands come and go when all members are still alive and kicking. Korn was such a powerful band…I miss them.

Side note: I find it hilarious how pissed people get about opinions that are different from theirs. I have noticed if anyone expresses dislike for this new music, they are immediately criticized and told to shut up, and/or questioned regarding their knowledge of band history, etc. It’s just an opinion about music; not some treatise on lifestyle, religion, or some other unrelated crap.

          • Wantmo

If Korn would be willing to make positive music Head would be all in. Korn isn’t a band you want your 5 year old daughter listening to haha. I love them and they are my favorite band but they are rough. Head has just took the deep, dark sound of Korn and mad positive music with it.

I have a lot of confidence in anything that has to do with Brian. He was my favorite member of Korn and I feel that his input was what made Korn so great and unique with those creepy, haunting melodies. I heard something else that he did recently and it made me go, “Wow, that’s were that element of old Korn went. He still has it!” In my honest opinion, it was like hearing that missing piece of the Korn album, “Korn lll: Remember Who You Are,” that I wanted to hear. It was a good album, great comeback, but it was like they made a better version of “Life Is Peachy,” and deleted all of Head’s tracks. I am so stoked that he still has it and uses it in his music today. Head gets my stamp of approval!

Awesome stuff Brian . Good job Bringing The REAL Korn Element back .METAL!

  • Branden Hornbeck

This song is so great! God is doing great things through yall!!! :D Keep it up!

  • vsushkov

Amazing, every new song is better than previous one. They just blow my mind. Crazy stuff. Like it very much.

  • Chelsey

I love the new song! I’m quite excited for the new album coming out in the fall as well!

  • Lecrazy

I haven’t listened to Chemicals yet, but Paralyzed was an epic song. This album is gonna rock.

  • Gemlneyes

uh sorry but i am not feeling this as a christian direction and whats up with all the shock rock look in your band it didnt work for candyland like 15 years ago. not in the christian genre, people run from that stuff togo to christ its gonna be an up hill battle unless you go main stream/secular.

    • Boo-ya

Did you stop to think maybe he isn’t going the “main-stream” path for a reason?

He’s trying to grab the attention of the kids and adults that are into heavier music (I feel), and it just so happens that a lot of them (kids and adults) go to shows where bands go for that ”shock” factor, such bands as Slipknot, Gwar, Marylin Manson, etc. Slipknot sets each other on fire with lighter-fluid while playing a show and  Gwar throws pigs blood on the crowd during shows. Now these bands aren’t Christian, but my point is that these are the kinds of people that Brian and Love and Death are tring to pull in. Some people in that ”scene”  normally wouldn’t grab his CD in a store if they didn’t know who he is.

I’m a christian and I like Korn, some Slipknot, and other bands that aren’t christian. You can’t say that Brian’s or Love and Death’s look is going to drive people away…..it might drive you away, but it’s the meaning behind the lyrics and the music…not the look of the band. Brian’s music is from his experiences and addictions, which a lot of people, not just adults, go through….and how can you say that people run away from that stuff (I guess you mean their look?) to Christ? Brian obviously didn’t go “clean-cut”, but  he gave his life to God, he changed his lifestyle and his habits. Which is more than I can say for some people who claim to follow God.

Lastly, who are you to say that they aren’t going in a christian direction? You don’t live, work with, or work around them; so you can’t say anything about their direction. That last comment of yours “its gonna be an up hill battle unless you go main stream/secular”, is total crap. You also don’t know God’s plan for Brian or the band. If this is the direction that God is leading Brian, then there won’t be an “up hill battle”, because Brian has God’s blessing.

I probably won’t get back on here for your reply, so have a good one, and next time don’t be so judgemental. “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”- Mathew 7:1

    Gimmicks
    Gimmicks
    Gimmicks

    • mattalone78

Yes, gimmicks run wild within the music industry. The true test is if the music can stand up on it’s own, regardless if gimmicks are used. I think Brian Welch can accomplish this easily.

  • Angel Dueñas.

We still noticing who was the main songwriter in Korn! I kinda always knew! Way better than anything Korn has put out in the last 6 years! Way to go Head!! Rocking out to the song, paralyzed was awesome too!

  • Ssnake72

The look is very silly. I would rather you be a little more real but I guess when youre living a dream you dont really know reality. I like the heavy opening riff and Brians testimony. The band is just silly looking with old gimmicks.

  • Chbuffo

No wonder Korn sounds not that great anymore! Really know where the backbone of the band went! Go Head!!! “Love and Death” is my favorite new Band!!!

  • Whatdoesitmatter

Yeah Why The Silly Looking Gimmicks -Just Play Man,.demons and clowns Are so lame .sorry its just how i see it.

  • Tracy Lee

I think this song is sick!!! I’m so stoked to hear the rest of the ep. Really can’t wait to hear it live…

  • SomeYungGuy

only five songs on your EP
?????  The song Paralyzed i liked, this new song(chemicals) not so much.
The  killer and the kisser REALLY ???? not feeling it. .But i hope the other 3 songs are better with less vocal gimmicks. Leave the makeup alone its kind of old and childish. But i cant wait to hear the rest of your EP.

    • Butwhateveriguess

You’re an idiot. Shutup and stop trying to be a music critic. Because you have no frickin’ clue what you’re talking about. This song is amazing so shutup

      • X-Mas

         Shut up! He’s right!
Chemicals wasn’t as great as Paralyzed and can’t even be compared to L.O.V.E!

  • Gkatlasdoc

The truth is … when U play PARALYZED & CHEMICALS back to back … it sounds like a very promising band & EP – The song and the look is KILLER

  • http://www.facebook.com/MLoveStudio Melissa Leslie

I was an honored photographing this band <3  POAB Designs and everyone involved rocked the upcoming video for 'Chemicals'!!!!  CANT WAIT!!!

  • X-Mas

When Brian released SMFM I was freaked out, the songs were so heavy and emotional, especially L.O.V.E, much better the Korn ever was, it had that unique sound that I was searching for.
Then Paralyzed was released, not as good as the first album but still OK.
And now comes Chemicals, as a song in itself it’s OK, a little worse compared to Paralyzed but I was expecting more from Brian given that he made such an awesome album before.
This track sounds even more like RED than Paralyzed did. I don’t dislike RED but, RED should sound like RED and LaD as LaD and not RED.

  • Etchmark

that’s freakin dope!  can’t wait to here get the EP.  With Love & Death, on tour with P.O.D. and Red, there’s going to be some killer shows!!!  Wish we could tour with you guys this summer :P

  • jahkingwarrior

well there is a reason they are my 2cnd favorite band in the world, next to staind. but i think it won’t be to long before they finaly take the top spot.  i have seen them live rocken out 5 times, and just brian with the whosoevers 2 times. brian is an amazing man a down to earth jah brotha. love, and death just simply amazing. can’t wait for the new album, and tour.

  • qrtal81

    Best song ever!

  • Rerun7177

Very good. So glad to see Brian’s incredible transformation to the Christian faith. It must have been hard to walk away from Korn, and all that comes with it, but in doing what he believed was God’s will for him he has been incredibly blessed, and in turn blessed many lives.

  • Genurko

Like this and Paralyzed much better than the first solo album.   Definitely see what Korn is missing as I just re-found it with Love & Death.   Way to go, Brian!
