The Complete Interview: Hot Chick in Hard Rock Ash Costello of New Years Day

When we interviewed Ash Costello, vocalist for New Years Day, for our Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock issue (see page 54), we discussed several topics, including the supernatural, ghosts, and magick.

Unfortunately, due to space constraints, we couldn’t include all of the interview. But that’s what the Internet is for! Read what she has to say below!

REVOLVER Do you believe in the supernatural?
ASH COSTELLO I do believe in the supernatural. I just feel that there are so many unanswered questions in this world that there is no way of knowing for sure if something magical does or does not exist. I keep an open mind when it comes to the unknown and am never truly set in my way on any one belief.

Do you believe in the Devil? If so, what form does he, or she, take?
I believe that the form of the Devil is not the typical red-colored demon with devil horns that most portray him as, but more as a behavioral evil in the sense of the way we treat one another. There is evil in this world and it comes from human kind–that’s why I try to wake up every day with that in mind and try to add some positive magic into this world to balance out the negativity that is all around us. I’m an incredibly spiritual person. I was raised by my grandma who was a practicing Wiccan and she taught me the importance of the energy we give off, being grateful to the earth and what its provided us, crystals, herbs and their healing powers and the control our mind has over our fate. I’ve tried to stay in tune with that to this day.

Have you ever seen a ghost or otherwise encountered one?
I wish! I would be so excited to meet a ghost–a nice one–or witness some sort of crazy supernatural happening! To say that something extraordinary reached out and touched me and made itself known would be amazing, I think. We have a family psychic and during a session once she said my grandma, who had passed away previously, had come through to her. She knew that I hadn’t been speaking to a certain person in my life and that I should reach out to them and reconnect with them. So shortly after, I took the advice and reached out and I’m glad I did. The psychic spoke of a lot of things that day that only my grandma would have known. It was an intense experience and only strengthened my trust and faith in the supernatural.

Do you believe in Heaven and Hell? If so, what form do you think they take? And which one do you think you’re going to?
I think its very hard for me to believe for certain that there is a Heaven or Hell. No one in this world truly knows for sure. I know that  I cant say there is or isn’t a Hell or Heaven. It would be silly for me to say that I know for sure what happens to us after we die. But, if we are going by the textbook idea of Heaven and Hell–then although I can be a demon at times, I know I’m an angel at heart, so I like to think I’d be headed to Heaven. Although white is not my color.

Have you had any experiences with fortune-telling, divination, curses, or other forms of magick?
I was raised to be extremely open-minded to every form of religion and belief, especially because my family was so eccentric. My grandma bought me the first spell books I ever had when I was in junior high and because of that I was called “witch” in school. I always felt that I knew something more magical than the other kids at school. Maybe I was meant to go to Hogwarts. The occult has always fascinated me. The idea of having some sort of control of the occurrences in your life is appealing to everyone. The idea of casting spells or putting energies into the world to help your life in a better way is a much safer feeling than the feeling of just rolling the dice and whatever life gives you then you have to deal with it. We actually have a family psychic that we have gone to for years. She is incredible and has predicted some incredibly accurate events in my life. I think if you have someone you trust and people that you are close to vouch for the persons abilities, then I truly believe in trusting psychics.

What’s your astrological sign, and do you think it fits you and your life well?
I am very into astrology. I am a Pisces, which is actually the most hopelessly romantic of all the astrological signs. To be exact, I’m a Pisces-Aquarius cusp which means I was born right in the middle of the two signs and share traits of both. I love my sign! Pisces are incredible creatures, very in tune with our emotions, we see the beauty in the simple things and are extremely emotional. Aquarius is very driven and independent, so I feel like I’ve gained the best of both worlds. I don’t live and breathe by the stars but whenever I’ve met a new guy in my life and looked up the compatibility of our two signs together–it’s almost never been wrong.
