The Complete Interview: Hot Chick in Hard Rock Lzzy Hale of Halestorm

When we interviewed Lzzy Hale, vocalist for Halestorm, for our Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock issue (see page 60), we discussed several topics, including the supernatural, ghosts and magick.

Unfortunately, due to space constraints, we couldn’t include all of the interview. But that’s what the Internet is for! Read what she has to say below!

REVOLVER Do you believe in the supernatural?
LZZY HALE Yes, I believe in the supernatural because of songwriting. It is an otherworldly experience to have someone or something speak through you, and you, as their medium through music.

Do you believe in the Devil? If so, what form does he, or she, take?
As a rock ‘n’ roller, it’s kind of standard that you believe in the Devil. But it’s more about believing in your own personal devil. The question is always, is my devil’s bad idea a good one–like leaving everything behind for a seemingly reckless dream? Or, is this devil’s good idea a bad one–like going out drinking with the guys til 5 a.m.? And sometimes you just gotta toss a coin and say, “Fuck it!”

Have you ever seen a ghost or otherwise encountered one?
Around the world there are many venues that we’ve performed that are haunted with ghosts. Those that I’ve seen or encountered include supposed stage hands that I find out later don’t really exist, children that try to trip you when finding your way to the dressing room or switch around the arrows pointing to the stage, or crazy rock spirits that like to talk through your equipment during a set.

Do you believe in Heaven and Hell? If so, what form do you think they take? And which one do you think you’re going to?
I think that everyone’s Heaven and Hell are different. I’d like to think that there’s a specific Heaven and a specific Hell for musicians. In Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven, you get to hang out with Ronnie James Dio while he teaches the angels to sing, or have a whiskey with Janis Joplin. But in Rock n’ Roll Hell, it’s just a never ending tour bus ride through the desert, where the toilet doesn’t work and all you have to eat is stale chips and ketchupy, mild salsa! Ah! I hope I go to the Rock n’ Roll Heaven, because I’ve been to that Hell!

Have you had any experiences with fortune-telling, divination, curses, or other forms of magick?
I’ve had my fortune told, my palm read, been cursed by gypsies, and been to a séance. Even though all of these experiences were able to be explained logically afterward, there’s a huge part of me that believes that every turn you make, everything you touch and every person you meet gives or takes something from you that alters your future. So I can only assume that to some degree all of these experiences have brought me to where I am today.

What’s your astrological sign, and do you think it fits you and your life well?
I’m a Libra and the zodiac symbol of the Libra are scales, which definitely fit me perfectly. My whole life and demeanor depends on balance. And I’m not just talking about wearing high heels onstage! This is very much what our song “Mz. Hyde” is about. I need to keep both sides of me in check, because if one takes over the other, everything falls apart. It’s a constant struggle to let both sides coexist, but when they get along, nothing is impossible!
