Last month, Avenged Sevenfold lead guitar Synyster Gates teamed up with Guitar Center and Schecter Guitar Research for Master Class with Synyster Gates, a program developed to recognize and reward talented musicians with the opportunity to learn from a famed guitarist in an engaging setting. Ten artists out of thousands of submissions from across the country were handpicked by Gates to fly out to the intimate Los Angeles master class.

“Avenged Sevenfold has always been a band that champions musicality,” Gates commented of the class. “I’m passionate about the art of guitar, and this Master Class is the perfect opportunity to help further the skills and careers of like-minded musicians.”

Check out the clip from the Master Class below, and let us know what you think in the comments. Avenged Sevenfold will be on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest this summer.

Don’t care for the music, and I find that guitar’s graphic very annoying to look at, but that’s just me.

I think that Gates is good at his thing, playing the predictable solos that belong with the american heavy metal, also he does it a bit more melodic than other guitarists in this style, although I have to say that he comes nowhere near any real guitar virtuoso or guitar legends like Jimi Hendrix, Jason Becker, David Gilmour, John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ritchie Blackmore, Luca Turilli, Michael Angelo Batio or Michael Romeo

    • Freddy Brignone

Enough with Hendrix. He wasn’t a virtuoso. He kept experimenting and he fucked up quite a bit actually. He was more impressive as a rythm guitarist than as a lead. Gilmour a virtuoso? Are you kidding? I love Gilmours always have but he’s not a virtuoso. Satriani and Vai are amazing but you’re talking about being predictable and you quote Malmsteen and even Batio. Those dudes are pretty predictable, with their classical overtones. Synyster Gates is pretty creative actually, although there are a few gimmicks here and there. And he definitely kicks my ass on the guitar.

Why are people always predicting what something will sound like. If you make predictions about the way someone is going to sound you aren’t going in with an open mind. If someone wants to show me something made by an artist who I don’t typically enjoy listening to, I’ll still listen and not think “this is going to be the same BS as usual.” Sometimes I turn out finding a song I love. For example I don’t like most Buckethead’s music, but the song Soothsayer is one of my favorite songs to play.
