BOOTLEG: EXCLUSIVE WARBRINGER TRACK, “PREY FOR DEATH"
In our never-ending quest to give you, the reader, the best music available, we present the Revolver Bootleg series. Throughout each month, we’ll post cool, new, and often-exclusive tracks right here for you to hear before anyone else.
This installment is an as-yet-unreleased cut from thrash-metal upstarts Warbringer, off their forthcoming new album, Waking into Nightmares (Century Media), which doesn’t hit stores until next Tuesday, May 19. As part of our unveiling of the track, titled “Prey for Death,” we talked to vocalist John Kevill about the making of the song and what makes it so undeniably badass.
REVOLVER What’s the song “Prey for Death” about?
JOHN KEVILL The idea from the song comes from, like, if you look at a culture of bacteria growing in a dish, they will at first spread and multiply until the limited resources begin to expire, at which point the whole thing will be plunged into chaos. “Prey for Death” is when one day this happens on earth.
Which part of it did you come up with first? And what was the inspiration?
The music was all written by [guitarist] Adam Carroll and Ryan Bates, our old drummer. It was the only song finished for the new album before we had our writing sessions for it. The lyrics came along in a week or two; the concept came up around the title for the song.
Was this an easy song to write or record? Why or why not?
This one came together for both very easily. We didn't make any major changes to the song Adam came up with, just embellished on what he already had there. And recording-wise, I think it was easy because it's more slow and rock-and-roll-ish than the rest of our songs.
How did you decide where to place “Prey for Death” on the album?
We put it after five full thrashing numbers in a row. It's more a slow headbanger—the first song like this we've done—and so I think it stands out in the middle of the album like that.
What sort of feedback have you gotten on this song so far?
Very positive! This one goes over great live.
