Review: Darkest Hour – The Human Romance

“Violent by Nature” goes the title of one track on the seventh album by these veteran East Coast metalcore mavens. And, sure enough, The Human Romance offers no shortage of the aggressive pummel for which Darkest Hour have long been known. Nestled among these dozen tracks, though, is also some of the band’s handsomest, most expansive music yet; check out the skyscraping guitars in “The World Engulfed in Flames” for proof of that widening palette. Midway through the nearly nine-minute “Terra Solaris” they even dial things down for a gorgeous acoustic-with-strings interlude that might remind a Metallica fan of the beginning of “Battery.” MIKAEL WOOD
