Review: Vader – Welcome to the Morbid Reich

Between 2002’s Revelations and 2009’s Necropolis, Vader seemed to fall victim to formulaic songwriting, but on their 10th full-length, Poland’s most vicious export is back in full force. Welcome looms with an imperial menace sometimes lost on the band. Tracks like “The Black Eye” and “I Am Who Feasts Upon Your Soul” offer sledgehammer riffage and serpentine guitar leads worthy of horns and grins from even the most weathered headbanger. Sole founding member Piotr Wiwzcarek needs to lock down the band’s current lineup, as Welcome to the Morbid Reich sees one of death metal’s oldest outfits at a recent zenith. CHRIS KROVATIN
