On their sixth album, 3 don’t offer any surprises. Which, for this gaggle of overachievers, means melodic ’80s-style hard rock, calypso beats, and technical prog–all within the first song. This album should get the band past the Coheed and Cambria comparisons that follow them around: The Ghost You Gave to Me has chops and memorable songs galore, as highlight tunes “High Times” and “Pretty” prove, all of which go to define 3′s distinct identity. Despite the vibe getting dark at times, the record is also jubilant, as if 3 are happy to have finally reached the perfect (and perfectly perplexing) middle ground between ambitious lonely-guy prog songwriting and ballsy rockin’ good times.
