Puscifer, the Northern Arizona-based band helmed by Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle), will release an eight-song EP titled Donkey Punch The Night on February 19 via Puscifer Entertainment.

“While continuing our tradition of releasing a few new songs at a time,” explained Keenan, “I also had an itch that needed scratching, and that itch was ‘Balls To The Wall.’ Which was followed by an even harder to reach itch known as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ And scratch them we did.”

The collection features two new songs written by Keenan and Puscifer cohorts Mat Mitchell, Carina Round and Josh Eustis: “Breathe” and “Dear Brother,” as well as two covers: Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Accept’s “Balls To The Wall.” Donkey Punch The Night was recorded in Jerome, Arizoza, in Keenan’s Caduceus Cellars (www.caduceus.org) with the same roster from 2011′s Conditions of My Parole (Keenan, Mitchell, Round, Eustis, Matt McJunkins and Jeff Friedl) and guests Zac Rae (piano), Juliette Commagere (vocals), Josh Morreau (bass) and Claire Acey (vocals).

Remixes of the four songs round-out the release with contributions from Los Angeles techno wizard Drumcell, Big Black Delta (aka Jonathan Bates, formerly of Mellowdrone and touring guitarist for M83), Sonoio (Italian multi-instrumentalist Alessandro Cortini of Modwheelmood and touring keyboard player for Muse and NIN) and Central American DJ, Silent Servant, who is well known for his mash-up of post-punk and techno.

Donkey Punch The Night track list:

1. Bohemian Rhapsody “O.G. Mix”
2. Breathe
3. Dear Brother
4. Balls To The Wall “PIllow Fight Mix”
5. Breathe “Drumcell rework”
6. Dear Brother “Denton rework” (Big Black Delta)
7. Balls To The Wall “Silent Servant El Guapo Mix”
8. Bohemian Rhapsody “Sonoio rework”

Puscifer recently announced their first tour dates outside of North America with the band performing three shows in Australia as well as performances at Lollapalooza Brazil and Lollapalooza Chile.

Yesterday, drummer Josh Freese took to Twitter to officially announce that he is parting ways with A Perfect Circle.

“After 13 years, I’ve decided to leave [futureusgalleryA Perfect Cirlce] with no plans of returning,” Freese wrote. “Apologies to those inquiring about the upcoming shows.”

A Perfect Circle reunited for a run of shows last year, but have not released an album of original material since 2003′s Thirteenth Step. With Maynard James Keenan presumably busy with a new Tool album, not to mention his solo project Puscifer, it seems unlikely APC will be hitting the studio anytime soon.

“We’ve been kicking around some stuff. Nothing’s ready,” Keenan told Loudwire last fall. “Until it’s really solid it doesn’t make any sense to present it, and right now he’s [futureusgalleryHowerdel] busy with Ashes Divide and I’m doing Puscifer.”

A Perfect Circle currently have one scheduled date for the remainder of 2012, a December 29 gig at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. The band were also recently announced as part of the 2013 lineup for Lollapalooza Chile.

Now main man John Connelly, also of Sevendust, selects his personal favorite supergroups.

1. Bad Company “Great songwriting with Paul Rogers voice makes for an awesome combination. Still to this day, Rodgers has one of the best voices in rock. Timeless music.”

2. Temple of the Dog “A great one off from a few of the pioneers of the Seattle scene. Great compilation of music written as a tribute to Andrew Wood.”

3. Foo Fighters “Come on! Anything Dave Grohl touches turns to gold. One of the best songwriters in music today hands down. Always keeping it real. The modern-day Tom Petty really.”

4. A Perfect Circle “In some ways, this band is what I wished Tool might have morphed into. More simple arrangements and simpler songwriting than Tool, which is ironically what put Tool on the map with “Sober.” Awesome songwriting and hooks.”

5. Black Country Communion “Time to go to school! Joe Bonamassa is one of the best guitar players in the game and his side band ain’t too shabby either. Glenn Hughes voice on top of it all makes for some of the coolest music most folks don’t know about.”

Puscifer is where Tool and A Perfect Circle frontman/celebrity wine enthusiast Maynard James Keenan goes when he really wants to get weird. Puscifer albums, as strange as they are, usually follow a familiar pattern and the occasionally awesome Parole is no exception: There are lots of crack session players, this time including Brit singer Carina Round, a ’90s industrial-meets-goth-meets-lounge vibe, and lots of vagina metaphors. Sometimes (like on the serpentine first single “Man Overboard”) it’s jaw dropping. Sometimes it sounds like Sting. Too many songs build and build and never explode, and though Keenan has never sounded growlier, Parole never really breaks loose. ALLISON STEWART

A good chunk of Puscifer’s upcoming second album, Conditions of My Parole, was even recorded in the viticulturist’s wine cellar. So Revolver asked the singer–who is interviewed in the new issue of magazine, available on newsstands everywhere and online right here–for a few tips on how to best appreciate our sips.

Watch your sugar intake
“One of the first things that’s going to interfere with anyone trying to appreciate wine is sugar. If you’re really serious about learning about wine, the best way to learn about it is get a couple bottles of the same thing. If you’re a person who drinks a lot of Coca-Cola, or eats candy, or eats a lot of ketchup and mustard, go ahead and have your wine with those foods. Then don’t eat or drink any of that stuff for a week. Just stick to stuff that’s not seasoned. No sugar. Don’t eat sweet stuff for a week. Then have your wine and try to recall your experience before when your palate was completely polluted with the sugar.”

Beware of the heat
“Think of wine like you would ice cream. If you’re picking up wine from somewhere and you put it in the trunk of your car and watch a movie and expect the wine to be OK when you get back… it’s just not going to be. It’s a vulnerable product. The heat will ruin it. That’s why we don’t ship during the summer. Once it’s left your hands, there’s no way to control how the postal service is gonna get it to you. They’ll just leave it in a truck in the sun in Phoenix overnight. Your wine’s toast.”

Know your allergies
“If you think you’re allergic to sulfites in wine, but you drink fresh orange juice—then you’re not allergic to sulfites. You’re probably more allergic to histamines or wines that have more wood in them then they should. Really oaky, woody wines. People think they’re reacting to the wine, when they’re really reacting to the wood tannins. Choose a wine that’s not been aged in oak.”

As told to Christopher R. Weingarten
