The most extreme tour of the year has returned with its most devastating and anticipated lineup yet.

The 7th annual Summer Slaughter Tour, presented by Indie Merch Store, ESP and Guitar World, is officially slated to run from July 19 through August 24. It features such heavyweights as The Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, The Ocean, Revocation, Aeon and two bands TBA. Stay tuned over the coming weeks for official tour dates to be announced.

One of the remaining open slots will be chosen by you, the fans, so be sure to click on the link below to get in your vote now. The voting ends March 31. Head here to vote.

Ash Avildsen, founder of Summer Slaughter on this year’s edition of the tour: “It’s year seven and I think 2013′s line-up is the most exciting and diverse yet. Slaughter has never been a one dimensional experience for fans. This year is a true testament to that as we have an amazing mix of extreme music’s influential icons and leaders of the new school. Let the underground unite!”

Greg Puciato (DEP vocalist) states: “We can’t wait to get back on the road! We’re launching a US tour in the spring, hitting Europe for some festivals and club shows, and then hitting several more cities with Summer Slaughter all summer long. We are absolutely amped. After being holed up in the studio for such a long time giving birth to One of Us is the Killer, we are all pent up and ready to share material new and old with our supporters doing what we love to do the most. Can’t wait to see and either kiss or rip off each and every one of your faces on the road with Summer Slaughter and year round, everywhere.”

Here, Alex Webster (pictured left), bassist of death-metal vets Cannibal Corpse, selects his faves.

5. Spawn of Possession, Incurso
“This is one of the most technical death-metal albums you’ll ever hear. The bass performance alone makes it a worthy purchase for any tech-death fan.”

4. Meshuggah, Koloss
“Each song on this album has its own character. Lots of variety–fast thrash parts, interesting mid-paced grooves, sludgy slow riffs–but it’s all tied together by the album’s overall dark vibe.”

3. Gojira, L’Enfant Sauvage
“More great, innovative metal from Gojira. Definitely not a run-of-the-mill extreme-metal album. Nobody sounds quite like these guys.”

2. Aeon, Aeons Black
“Pure death-metal hell from one of my favorite bands. Brutal, memorable songs with killer musicianship.”

1. Overkill, The Electric Age
“These guys are at the top of their game right now, and that’s no small feat for a band with such a history. This album is heavy as fuck, catchy, and precisely executed.”

Death metal is often described using the vocabulary of violence and war—some songs thrash and mangle, others tear and rip. But few albums truly evoke a sense of carnage like Aeons Black. These Swedish veterans have honed their take on Floridian-styled death metal into a monster of an album that rumbles and churns like a stampeding army, yet sacrifices none of Aeon’s trademark focus on memorable, pit-stoking riffs. The result is one of the best death-metal albums of 2012, the strongest album of Aeon’s career, and a near-essential purchase for anybody with even a passing interest in the genre. CLARKE READ
