“I never anticipated seeing 40,” shrugs Black Veil Brides frontman Andy Biersack when talking about the top five injuries he suffered in 2011, at least one of which could have been life-threatening. “I smoke two packs a day and drink like a camel. I just don’t really think about death. I know I’m gonna die one day, but if I can achieve all of my goals and live exactly the way I want to before then, I’ll have no regrets when I die. I don’t try to hurt myself like Iggy Pop or Marilyn Manson or anything–it’s just the byproduct of the chaos of being onstage.”

And his embrace of that chaos is one the things that make Biersack–who appears on the cover of Revolver‘s new, 100th issue, and whose band just released a new EP, Rebels–the fast-rising rock star that he is. The day after breaking his nose during a gig in Luxembourg, Biersack talked to Revolver from a hospital bed in London and revealed the top 5 stage accidents he suffered in 2011.

Self-Knockout
“We played a festival in Phoenix and normally I mock punch myself in the head with the mic, but I connected right with my temple and knocked myself out for the whole beginning of the first song of the set. I completely blacked out on the stage. For 50 or 60 seconds, I was lights out.”

On Your Knees
“I was on a tour in San Francisco. I tried to jump off the drum riser onto the stage and I tripped and landed right on both of my knees. I had to wear knee braces for the rest of the tour.”

A Nose for Drums
“Being a singer, I can easily break facial extremities, but breaking my nose in Luxembourg was extremely painful. I rolled backwards onstage and then stood up and I didn’t know I was right under the drum riser. The riser made contact on the bone right in the middle of my nose and cracked it from above my eyebrows right down the bridge. I fell down and was unconscious for a second. Then I got back up and went backstage to a mirror and saw it was huge and misshapen. They took me to the hospital in an ambulance.”

Warped Tooth
“On Warped Tour in Boise, Idaho, I broke my tooth on the mic. I took a pretty significant chunk out of my tooth and had to have it sanded down. It wasn’t the most painful injury, but it was the most unexpected one. I always knew I could break a leg or my nose, but I never thought I’d break my teeth.”

Stage Dive
“In June, we were in Los Angeles at our CD release show and I climbed 30 feet in the air on a marble pillar and tried to get back on the stage but missed by about eight feet. I landed on my ribs on another marble pillar that was sticking out of the ground. I shattered two ribs and displaced one.”

When we interviewed Picture Me Broken’s Brooklyn for the new Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock issue–she’s also featured in the 2012 Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock calendar–we talked about a range of topics, from her band’s upcoming album to how she celebrated her milestone 18th birthday. Unfortunately, due to space constraints in the issue, we weren’t able to include most of our chat–but that’s what the Internet is for! Read what she has to say below.

REVOLVER How’s the new album coming along?
BROOKLYN I’m absolutely ecstatic about the new album. We have two phenomenal new guitar players and fresh vision for the band entirely. I’ve been taking a very active role as far as the songwriting goes, using my eight years of classical piano training to write a lot of the instrumental work, arrangements, and songs as a whole, and that’s been very rewarding for me as a passionate musician. Collaborating with my boys has also produced something that stands as an album capitalized on musicianship and being in a real band that formed organically, setting us apart from the plague of manufactured gimmicks out there today.

What are you guys trying to do differently this time around?
I say with confidence that we are an entirely different band. We’re abandoning all genre criteria, musical trends, and silly subgenres like “screamo”–that’s not to say I wont continue screaming–and simply creating music regardless of whether or not it fits into any of the boxes we’ve been placed in or are expected to fit. We’re no longer a group of 15 or 16 year olds experimenting as we were on our previous releases. We’re seasoned musicians with a vision and much more mature songwriting capabilities.

Can you share some song titles?
My current favorite track is titled “Corrupt Me.”

What have you been listening to recently?
In seeking lyrical inspiration, I’ve been immersing myself in a lot of Eminem and Bad Meets Evil simply because they so clearly convey the most high-strung emotions and dramatic life situations. I’m trying to capture this more in my own lyrics. I’ve also been gravitating back to a lot of my HIM albums lately because I love electronic textures mixed with dark rock music.

Congrats on turning 18. How did you celebrate your birthday?
Thank you. I spent my 18th birthday on the set of the first Black Veil Brides music video shoot of their new album, with Andy

and the rest of the guys. It was a blast!

How does it feel to be officially an adult?
I’ve felt like an adult and always had a sense of maturity since I was in grade school, perhaps because I started working toward building my music career so early in life, but turning 18 certainly makes it more official. I even got myself a lip piercing in honor of being legal that I took out three months later.

Who are you musical heroes and why?
Davey Havok has always been the figure that I’ve looked to both as a musician and as a person. I remember stumbling upon a couple of AFI albums when I was about 10 years old and they sparked my interest in darker, more aggressive music, which is what I continue to write to this day. I also practiced a vegan/vegetarian and straightedge lifestyle throughout high school to match his. He has had a very positive effect on my life in terms of being a role model and I think that’s rare to find in rock musicians. Other heroes include [futureusgalleryMuse's] Matthew Bellamy, Skylar Grey, [futureusgalleryHeart's] Ann Wilson, and Eminem.

What’s the sexiest hard-rock or metal song and why?
“Welcome to the Jungle”–Guns N’ Roses. It’s the essence of sexy and rock and roll.

“I’m bedridden in a hotel bed in London just sitting here collecting dirt on the blankets and ordering room service and being in pain. I can’t really breathe out of my nose, and it looks like I’m wearing a sleep mask made out of bruises.

“I was onstage doing my typical routine to entertain the crowd. I was rolling around and being crazy. Normally, before ‘Legacy’ goes into a breakdown-y guitar solo-y kind of part, I get down on my knees and do a mock prayer. I did that and then rolled backwards and stood up and I didn’t realize I was directly under the four-foot drum riser. I smashed the bone dead center on my skull. From above my eyebrows, right down the bridge of my nose, that’s where I cracked. I was unconscious for a second.

“I knew something terrible had happened immediately. I jumped up, but I was still in shock and I didn’t really feel it yet. I was rubbing my nose to try to figure out what was happening. And I ran into my tour manager at the side of the stage and I asked him if there was something wrong with my nose. And he looked at me like I was crazy and said it was huge and misshapen. That’s when the realization hit me that I was really hurt. I started getting really dizzy and stumbled my way offstage and got to the backstage area. I positioned myself in front of a mirror and saw it was huge and ridiculous. And that’s when the pain set in and it was pretty excruciating. But there wasn’t a lot of bleeding or anything because of where it broke.

“I went to the hospital in Luxembourg and nobody spoke English. They were really adamant about putting me on a stretcher, and I was very much against that. I walked very fast away from them. They took me in an ambulance right in front of where the fans are, and the last thing I want to do is be the guy who breaks his nose and then has to ride on a stretcher to the ambulance with his thumbs up in the air.

“I walked out with my tour manager and I was pretty dizzy, I couldn’t really see, but I was always pretty cognitive. The only thing I have right now because of the concussion is I feel like I’m watching one of those super druggy movies where all the lights have a trail. Everything I see, it’s as if it sort of has Vaseline around the edges and it’s a little nauseating to be honest. It’s hard to use a computer.

“Right now I’m trying to figure out what to do. I would really like to finish the tour. I’ve been advised against it. But I want to try. At the end of the day, if I have to go onstage and be in pain for 40 minutes I’m do my best to give the audience the show that they have already paid for.”

Biersack had the following to say about the injury on Twitter:

“For those asking, during last night’s show I broke my nose down the center, splitting the bone. Due to my current injury we are putting all Euro/UK shows on hold until further notice. I apologize & promise to do my best to recover. I apologize and promise to do my best to recover. Excruciating pain and it’s my own damn stage antics fault. I promise to try my best to heal quickly.”

Black Veil Brides, mended nose and all, will be part of the Buried Alive Tour, with Avenged Sevenfold, Hollywood Undead, and Asking Alexandria.
