Summer Slaughter Tour to Include Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery and More

The most extreme tour of the year has returned with its most devastating and anticipated lineup yet.

The 7th annual Summer Slaughter Tour, presented by Indie Merch Store, ESP and Guitar World, is officially slated to run from July 19 through August 24. It features such heavyweights as The Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, The Ocean, Revocation, Aeon and two bands TBA. Stay tuned over the coming weeks for official tour dates to be announced.

Ash Avildsen, founder of Summer Slaughter on this year’s edition of the tour: “It’s year seven and I think 2013′s line-up is the most exciting and diverse yet. We’re launching a US tour in the spring, hitting Europe for some festivals and club shows, and then hitting several more cities with Summer Slaughter all summer long. We are absolutely amped. On March 2, Meshuggah, Animals as Leaders, and Intronaut annihilated Los Angeles’ the Wiltern, surely flooding local hospitals with cases of whiplash and vertigo. Our own Stephanie Cabral was there to catch the action. Check out her photos below and let us know what you think in the comments.

On November 24, the NOS Event Center hosted California Metalfest VI, which featured a face-ripping lineup including Dillinger Escape Plan (pictured above), As I Lay Dying, Darkest Hour, Animals as Leaders, Pierce the Veil, Unearth, Bleeding Through, Born of Osiris, For Today, and many more. New Music Education Service–Featuring Leading Hard Rock/Metal Musicians–Launches on January 9

BandHappy, a new live online and in-person music education service, featuring a host of hard-rock and metal musicians, will launch on January 9. Founded by Periphery drummer Matt Halpern, the service offers access to one-on-one lessons–in person or online–with the teacher of your choice.

Some of the teachers already signed up include Lamb of God’s Chris and Willie Adler, Dillinger Escape Plan’s Ben Weinman, Tosin Abasi from Animals as Leaders, as well as a host of other top professionals.

Review: Animals as Leaders – Weightless

Animals as Leaders are essentially a brain-bending conduit for the next-level shredding of eight-string diabolist Tosin Abasi. Maniacally ﬁngertapping with the unpredictable pulse of a sickly modem, Abasi is cybersurﬁng with the aliens, bringing future-shocked wheedle-wheedle to a generation weaned on Meshuggah and Aphex Twin. His 2009 debut suffered from the ﬂat, lifeless hammering of programmed drums, but this follow-up debuts a superhuman, super-heavy full band, who magically keep time with his rubbery arrhythmia from the Ministry of Silly Mosh. Abasi’s nonstop ﬂurrious freak-outs get monotonous after 47 minutes, but he’s never low on energy, surprises, or staggering chops. CHRISTOPHER R. WEINGARTEN
