For a band, recording can be a tumultuous time or it could go very smooth. Since metalcore act August Burns Red are in the studio now recording album No. 5, Revolver asked guitarist JB Brubaker (pictured left) what the band’s most memorable studio moments have been over its history.

The band expects to release the album later this year and August Burns Red will be performing on the main stage of the Vans Warped Tour this summer.

1. “While tracking Leveler, we had a huge band fight over a drum part that Suecof and Matt came up with over a section in the song ‘Divisions.’ We were split down the middle on the part and Suecof poked and prodded at everyone until I exploded on him and cussed him out, which caused Jake to lose it and storm out of the room. It was quite uncomfortable and will be remembered as one of the more dramatic moments we’ve had together as a band as we are generally very even-keeled as a group.”

2. “While tracking Messengers with producer Tue Madsen, we ran into a tremolo-picking riff in a section in the song ‘Redemption’ that was a real bugger and took us forever to get a good take of. It was to the point where we were just passing the guitar around the room between Brent , Tue, Dustin , and myself. Each of us would take a shot at tracking it and eventually give up and pass the guitar on to the next person. Tue was the first one to get a usable take. Pathetic!”

3. “While tracking Constellations with Suecof, we had Tommy Rogers from Between the Buried and Me come in and track a clean singing part in the song ‘Indonesia.’ While we are friends with the BTBAM guys, we are also big fans of their band so to have Tommy come in and sing on our album was really special for us. It was also the first clean singing part we had ever had on an album and to this day is the only non-gang vocal singing part we’ve ever had on album. Very cool moment for us.”

4. “When we tracked our Christmas album Sleddin’ Hill, we had an idea for a vocal choir part over the end of the song ‘Oh Holy Night.’ Our drummer Matt’s sister was in the choir at her college and Matt was buddies with the director, Dr. Bigley. He had his choir learn a part he had written specifically for the section in ‘Oh Holy Night’ and producer Carson Slovak brought in a portable Pro-Tools rig and recorded the entire 50-plus person choir live. It gave me goosebumps and was a cool moment as we had never done anything like that before.”

5. “When we were just starting out, we tracked our first full length with producer Adam D , which was quite an honor for us as we were simply a group of unknown metal wannabes. When our drummer Matt setup his kit, his cymbals were covered in green gunk from all the local shows we had played over the past year or two. The concept of cleaning cymbals was foreign to us at this point and we had planned on just tracking the album with the gear we had. Adam took one look at the cymbals and informed us that we would be visiting a music store immediately because those cymbals were far too shot to use in the studio. That was one of many lessons we learned over that session.”

Here, Dan Briggs (pictured left), bassist of the prog-metal band Between the Buried and Me, selects his faves.

5. Spiritualized, Sweet Heart Sweet Light
“I was criminally late to hearing this band, and when I discovered Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space, I instantly went out and bought their whole catalog. ‘Hey Jane’ is a perfect example of how well this band balances melody and brilliant song writing with space-rock freakouts.”

4. Astra, The Black Chord
“One of my favorite modern bands, probably because they sound like they just time traveled here from the ’70s. The Weirding floored me when I discovered it in 2009, and they went even further on this one developing their own sound while retaining influence from the powerhouse progressive rock bands of the ’70s. Goddammit, Astra are amazing!”

3. Anglagard, Viljans Oga
“I was introduced to this band in high school and their song ‘Jordok’ is one of my favorite symphonic prog songs to date. I was quite beside myself to see they had a new record out, their first since 1996. The composition and arranging skills they have are amazing. They definitely sound like a small chamber orchestra at times.”

2. Field Music, Plumb
“These guys have been my favorite modern British band since the first time Between The Buried and Me went overseas in December 2006. I read a review of their record Tones of Town which likened it to the Genesis classic The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and I was sold! Progressive pop rock written by the smartest and most talented men.”

1. Ulver, Childhood’s End
“Ulver is a band I love for always coming out of left field with their releases, and this one is no different. Brilliant renditions of psychedelic pop songs from the ’60s, turned me on to a whole bunch of new (old) bands.”

With this, the full-length follow-up to its 2011 EP, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues, the North Carolina progressive-metal quintet crafts a 72-minute concept album that includes some of its freshest material yet, but also some of its dullest. “Lay Your Ghosts to Rest” is an epic piece that showcases the band’s trademark sonic diversity, and concludes with an unforgettable outro. Nevertheless, much of the heavy material on the album sounds like a less-than-inspired rehash of the group’s previous work. The gems often lie in lighter moments like “The Black Box,” but progressive-metal fans will still appreciate the daring scope of The Parallax II. DAVID McKENNA

Progressive metal band Between the Buried and Me have just premiered a new video for their “Astral Body.” Watch the Wes Richardson-directed clip below.

“Astral Body” is taken from the band’s upcoming new album, The Parallax II: Future Sequence, which follows last year’s widely acclaimed EP, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues (buy on iTunes).

“The two main characters of the story take on a journey through space and time with the unenviable task of having to cure the flaws of humanity by any means necessary,” says guitarist Paul Waggoner. “While the EP served mostly as an introduction to the characters, Future Sequence contains the action of the story. The lyrics are written in the stream of consciousness style, which really helps to capture the perspective and emotion of the characters. We really enjoyed the challenge of writing this record, and I think we were all pleasantly surprised with how well the music and lyrics jived with one another. I couldn’t be happier with how Future Sequence turned out.”
