The much-anticipated sixth annual California Metalfest will take place at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California, Saturday, November 24, with Grammy-nominated, Massachusetts metal band Killswitch Engage headlining.

It’s a special gig for the group, long considered one of the forbearers of the metal resurgence of the ’00s, as they will celebrate the 10th anniversary of their landmark release, 2002′s genre-defining Alive or Just Breathing. To commemorate the album, KSE will play the album in its entirety, from start to finish, as well as other more recent hits.

Ash Avildsen, founder of California Metalfest, had this to say: “Alive or Just Breathing is one of the most important and timeless albums for this era of heavy music. KsE’s special headlining set combined with the rest of the line-up is going to make for an incredible day of metal and memories. Having all these bands in the same place on one day is really exciting as a fan and as a festival producer.”

WWE Superstar “Mankind” Mick Foley will be hosting the festival along with several other stars (TBA) who will be doing signings and appearances. There also will be many carnival-style prize games where fans can win special, limited-edition band merch and memorabilia instead of stuffed animals. California Metalfest VI promises to be much more of an experience than just a day filled with great music.

Special ticketing packages and general admission tickets are available exclusively through Sound Check Hollywood.

The lineup also features Asking Alexandria, As I Lay Dying, Black Veil Brides, Pierce The Veil, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Chiodos w/Craig Owens, For Today, Suicide Silence, Memphis May Fire, Blessthefall, Unearth, Bleeding Through, The Faceless, Born Of Osiris, Winds Of Plague, Shadows Fall, Veil of Maya, Acacia Strain, Attila, Sleeping Giant, Upon A Burning Body among a slew of others.

The complete lineup and information can be located at CAMetalfest.com.

Utah deathcore quintet Chelsea Grin blends technicality, melody, and a heaping scoop of breakdown-fueled brutality on their new EP, Evolve. With the addition of former Born of Osiris guitarist Jason Richardson, the band puts its technical chops on greater display, crafting sweeping riffs reminiscent of Richardson’s former group. There is also greater emphasis on melody on this EP, with plenty of eerie orchestral effects throughout. The band doesn’t rely so heavily on one-dimensional breakdowns, and standout tracks like “S.H.O.T.” and “The Second Coming” reveal how much Chelsea Grin has matured since their last full-length, My Damnation. Living up to its title, Evolve will definitely please fans and probably surprise others who are bored with deathcore. DAVID MCKENNA

Breakdown-overloaded metalcore has saturated the heavy-metal market in recent years, and new releases increasingly sound like mundane imitations of other records. To make something memorable in 2011, a band must go beyond the same sound everyone else is producing—or at least do it much better.

Illinois tech-deathcore sextet Born of Osiris tries to do both on their latest record, The Discovery, and end up pulling the mission off with considerable success. Their third full-length finds the band sharpening its virtuosic skills and adding more melody in guitar riffs and keyboard fills. The synthesis of technical breakdowns, eerie synth noises, shredding solos, and stuttering guitar riffs make for some really kickass music.

On “Follow the Signs,” a creepy keyboard melody is played over a pummeling breakdown, and the song ends with a haunting guitar solo vaguely reminiscent of Alex Skolnick’s work. Another standout is “Recreate,” which features transitions from Meshuggah-esque heaviness to fresh guitar harmonies. The album ends with “Behold,” a track that captures the musicians’ impressive technicality and displays their standout ability to reign it in enough to produce a catchy, as well as flashy, song.

Occasionally the band lapses into predictable deathcore formulas. The layered screaming sounds great sometimes but cheesy at other. The continuous breakdown structure of songs like “Two Worlds of Design” gets repetitive quickly. Nevertheless, The Discovery is an original record that places Born of Osiris as among the best in their style of metal. DAVID MCKENNA
