Kirk Hammett evidently knows how to throw a book party. The Metallica guitarist invited Bay Area thrashers Death Angel to perform at the release party for his new book, Too Much Horror Business. (Hah! Take that, Jonathan Franzen!)
During the performance, Hammett joined the band for a handful of songs, including renditions of Metallica’s “Trapped Under Ice,” Kiss’ “She” and, fittingly, Misfits’ “Horror Business.” You can watch fan-filmed footage from the performance below.
Hammett’s relationship with Death Angel goes back more than two decades, when the Metallica guitarist produced the band’s 1986 demo, Kill As One.

Metallica have posted a video recap of the final night of their 30th anniversary shows in San Francisco, earlier this month. For the finale of Metallica’s four-night 30th Anniversary concert extravaganza on Saturday night at San Francisco’s the Fillmore, the legendary thrash band reunited onstage with the musicians of its earliest lineups for a rendition of the song “Hit the Lights.” Guitarist Dave Mustaine, who’s made his name with Megadeth in this years since his departure from Metallica, joined Metallica with original bassist Ron McGovney and guitarist Lloyd Grant, who played on the first recording of the song as it appeared on the Metal Massacre compilation in 1982. Over the course of the shows, which were held for members of the band’s fan club, Metallica paid tribute to their now-deceased bassist Cliff Burton and joined up with musicians whom they have played with over the years, including Jason Newsted, Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler, Kid Rock, Lou Reed, Marianne Faithfull, Glenn Danzig, Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell, and present and former members of Mercyful Fate, Diamond Head, Armored Saint, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Down, Faith No More, the Anti-Nowhere League, Death Angel, Apocalyptica, Saxon, and more. The band filmed each of the shows, so look for a release of these shows in some form in the future.

Thrash luminaries Anthrax and Testament are set to co-headline a North American tour this fall, beginning on October 14. Support throughout the trek to more than two dozen cities will come from Death Angel.
The tour marks the first time in more than a decade that Anthrax and Testament have toured together. For Anthrax it represents a further coming together with fellow thrash legends, coming hot on the heels of the Big Four concert at New York City’s Yankee Stadium next week.
“We’ve been tight with the guys in Testament for a long, long time,” Anthrax’s Charlie Benante commented. “So we’re really looking forward to hanging out with them on the road. And all of us in Anthrax are big Death Angel fans, so this is going to be a monster of a good time—for all of us and for the fans. Plus, with the incredible success of The Big Four shows over the last year, we wanted to tour with some of the ‘second wave’ of thrash bands.”
