If you missed the 2013 version of the Orion Music + More fest, which took place on Detroit’s Belle Isle over the weekend, we hope this photo gallery will help set the scene.

The fest kicked off Saturday, June 8; among Saturday’s events were Metallica’s surprise set as a fake band, Dehann, during which they performed all of Kill ‘Em All, their 1983 debut album. Orion built to a climax Sunday night, once again with festival hosts Metallica taking the stage.

Along the way, there were performances by Deftones, Rise Against, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Bronx, Dead Sara, Battlecross, Dropkick Murphys, the Dillinger Escape Plan and many more.

The biggest names in hard-rock and heavy-metal gathered at Club Nokia in Los Angeles May 2, 2013, for the fifth annual Revolver Golden Gods Award Show. During the event, Revolver paid tribute to some of the fallen heroes of the heavy-music community. Now you can watch the video below. Rest in peace.

During their concert at the Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri, Deftones paid tribute to Kris Kross founder Chris Kelly, who died on Wednesday of an apparent drug overdose, by covering the ’90s hi-hop group’s “Jump.” Just last month, Deftones lost one of their own founding members, bassist Chi Cheng, who passed away five years after a car accident left him in a coma. Several members of the rock community responded over the weekend to the passing of Chi Cheng, the Deftones bassist, who died early Saturday at age 42.

Cheng died 3 a.m. Saturday in the emergency room. “His heart just suddenly stopped,” Cheng’s mother, Jeanne Marie Cheng, wrote on the One Love for Chi website. “He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear. He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone.”

Cheng had been involved in a car accident in November 2008, which left him in a coma for some time. Although he started showing signs of improvement, he was never able to make a complete recovery.

Several friends and admirers have expressed their condolences and tributes via Twitter, including Slash, Tom Morello and guitarist John 5. You can check out some of the tweets below.

UPDATED: Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter posted the following statement on the Deftones Facebook page.

“There are so many things I can say, and yet at this moment, none of it matters or compares to the loss everyone feels. There will be a hole in our lives where Chi once was. But that will be filled everyday with all of our love and memories we all have in our heart. He will always be here because of love. It’s time we all give our love and best, and do our best to love. Especially ourselves, Chi would want that for everyone. All our healing will begin with love. I love you, Chi.”

Deftones bassist Chi Cheng passed away early Saturday morning after being in a coma and then a semi-conscious state since a car accident in 2008. He was 42.

His family posted the following statement on OneLoveForChi,com:

“Our dearest Family,

This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you. He was taken to the emegency room and at 3 am today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear.

He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone. I will write more later. I will be going through the oneloveforchi and any other information may not be reliable. If you have any stories or messages to share please send them to the onelove site. Please hold Mae and Ming and the siblings and especially Chi’s son, Gabriel in your prayers. It is so hard to let go.

OneLoveForChi.com was set up by a Deftones fan to help pay medical bills. Since then, the site has become a place where fans can talk and Cheng’s family members give updates.

The Deftones have yet to make a formal statement about Cheng’s passing.

When Revolver spoke to Cheng’s brother Ming last year, he said Chi was having a difficult year after a recent period of steady progress.

Since the accident, the Deftones have released two albums. One of which, Koi No Yokan, was named Revolver‘s Album of the Year for 2012. Sergio Vega, also of Quicksand, has been filling in on bass.

Cheng cofounded the Deftones with vocalist Chino Moreno over two decades ago. He contributed to five albums including White Pony, which achieved platinum status and earned the band a Grammy for Best Metal Performance.
