Record Store Day has become an audiophile’s Christmas. The now annual event has spread worldwide to become a day where bands and record labels put out special vinyl releases including colored vinyl, exclusives, and picture discs. This year’s Record Store Day will be held on April 20.
One notable release is Earache Records’ The World’s Shortest Album, which features 13 songs in 83 seconds. Of course, bands like Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, Anal Cunt and more are included.

Carmine Appice, drummer for Vanilla Fudge and Cactus, is currently working on the Carmine Appice’s Rockaholics Metal Fan Camp set for August 26-30 at Full Moon Resort in the heart of the “Forever Wild” Catskill Forest Preserve, just one half hour west of Woodstock, New York. Appice will be joined by “camp counselors” including singer-guitarist Eric Bloom (Blue Öyster Cult), drummer James Kottak (Scorpions), guitarist Eddie Ojeda (Twisted Sister), and renowned shredder Michael Angelo Batio.
To celebrate his new Metal Camp, Appice put together his list of the top six heavy-metal drumming songs of all time:
1. “When The Levee Breaks, ” Led Zeppelin
“I always loved the sleazy, heavy drum groove together with the bluesy harp. Just a really cool song with great production.”
2. “We Rock,” Dio
“When I used to go see my brother play that song–and when I heard it on the album–I was blown away. The tempo was great. Ronnie’s voice, the solo, great arrangement–kickass metal!”
3. “Bark at the Moon,” Ozzy Osbourne
“When I played the song live with Ozzy and was involved with the mix, I loved this song. Great hook idea, and the very visual lyrics by Daisley are awesome. Great bass and guitar, and Ozzy sang the crap out of it. Lots of energy in that one.”
4. “Valley of the Kings,” Blue Murder
“John Sykes is a great songwriter. When I heard the demo of this song, I immediately loved it. I used to listen to the demo just for fun. Then after we actually recorded it, the sound that Bob Rock and Mike Fraser got was amazing. Then I liked it even more!”
5. “In the Still of the Night,” Whitesnake
“A great song again with Sykes as a writer. Real cool arrangement, and very ’70s in approach–except very heavy. I still turn the radio up when it comes on!”
6. “Highway To Hell,” AC/DC
“I always liked the simplicity of that song. And the chorus is infectious. The whole band just sounds so great together, with each instrument jelling perfectly to create this amazing heavy groove. Great production as well.”

Eagle Rock Entertainment will release a new live Dio CD/DVD/Blu-ray, Finding The Sacred Heart – Live In Philly 1986, on May 28.
The show on the was recorded at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on June 17, 1986, during the second leg of the Sacred Heart tour, which featured new guitarist Craig Goldy. The show was issued in an edited form, first on VHS and then DVD. For the first time, however, the full concert is being released as a double LP in the original running order and with remastered sound.
The full band lineup for the show is Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Vinny Appice (drums), Jimmy Bain (bass), Craig Goldy (guitar) and Claude Schnell (keyboards).
The release features “Holy Diver,” “Don’t Talk To Strangers,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll Children,” “Sacred Heart,” “Stand Up And Shout,” “Rainbow In The Dark” and “We Rock” plus other classics from Ronnie James Dio’s career, including “Heaven And Hell,” “Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Man On The Silver Mountain.” You can see the complete track listing below.
Finding The Sacred Heart – Live In Philly 1986 will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, 2CD and 2LP. The DVD and Blu-ray versions offer fully restored film footage of the complete concert available for the first time. The audio on the 2CD and double LP is fully remastered. Bonus features (on DVD and Blu-ray) include a Sacred Heart Tour featurette, an interview from 1986 and a separate interview with Dio and Goldy, plus the “Rock ‘n’ Roll Children” music video and a behind-the-scenes feature.

A 15-disc box set containing Ronnie James Dio’s best singles is slated to be released in late August.
According to Hennemusic.com, Dio: The Singles Collection includes the band’s classic Vertigo/Universal singles presented as replicas of the original releases, plus a DVD of the corresponding music videos.
The 14 CDs include 48 songs from 14 previous singles. The DVD includes 12 videos.

The project, which is being organized by Ronnie’s wife/manager Wendy Dio, might include contributions from Metallica, Anthrax, Rob Halford, Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan, Alice Cooper, Glenn Hughes, Sebastian Bach, Chris Jericho and Dave Grohl.

Former Dio guitarist Tracy “G” Grijalva will release a new album featuring songs cowritten with the late Ronnie James Dio. The tracks will feature the vocals of Hydrogyn frontwoman Julie Westlake. As well as the material written for the Dio albums Strange Highways and Angry Machines, the record will also include some of Grijalva’s material following his departure from Dio in 1999.
Grijalva is also currently working on a new book, G: The Dio Years and Beyond the Skull, that chronicles his time in Dio.
