Finally, the two ex-Gorgoroth firebrands behind the biggest black-metal feud of the past decade can say they have closure. This long-storied album has been in the works since frontman Gaahl and bassist King split from the embittered Norwegian blasters in 2008—with speed bumps arising when Gaahl “retired” from metal and King hired Dimmu Borgir’s Shagrath to sing the first batch of God Seed songs under the name Ov Hell. The break has proven worth it, though. Rather than put out more Burzum-influenced black-metal backwash, they’ve interpolated elements of gloom-rock, prog, and even experimental electronics into their classic-black collages, and, as improbable as it may seem, the variety works. The deluxe digipack will be released on October 25 in the U.S.

The Wacken performance was a reenactment of Gorgoroth’s controversial Black Mass show from Krakow, Poland in 2004, which was filmed in a TV studio. The band’s Wacken concert included “crucified” nude models, satanic symbols, sheeps heads, and oodles of sheep’s blood.

The group effectively dissolved after Gaahl elected to retire from the scene.
