The video, directed by Wayne Isham, was described by the band as a “raw and emotional” tribute to the band’s late drummer, Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. Sullivan died on December 28, 2009 of an apparent drug overdose, during the writing of what became the band’s latest album, Nightmare. The band chose to replace the Rev termporarily with his favorite drummer, Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy, who appeared on Nightmare and subsequent tour dates. As we bid farewell to a year full of tragedy, the new issue of Revolver magazine—available on newsstands everywhere on December 21—remembers many of hard rock and metal’s most dearly departed. The cover features a stunning painting by legendary comic-book artist J.G. Jones, acclaimed for his work on Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, as well as for co-creating the series Wanted, which was adapted into a 2008 movie starring Angelina Jolie. Jones depicts Ronnie James Dio, Slipknot’s Paul Gray, Avenged Sevenfold’s the Rev, Type O Negative’s Peter Steele, Pantera’s Dimebag Darrell, Metallica’s Cliff Burton, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Ozzy Osbourne’s Randy Rhoads, Queen’s Freddie Mercury, and Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley rocking together in heaven. The cover painting also appears as a free poster with the issue.

Inside the issue, Revolver remembers the cover artists and many of hard rock and metal’s other fallen heroes via exclusive interviews, including the first with Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, Shawn “Clown” Crahan, Chris Fehn, and Joey Jordison—and Paul Gray’s wife, Brenna—since Paul’s death, and the first with the surviving members of Type O Negative since Peter Steele’s passing. Also interviewed are Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows, Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, Alice in Chains’ Mike Inez, Black Label Society’s Zakk Wylde, Ramones’ Marky Ramone, Melvins’ Buzz Osborne, rapper Ice-T, and more.

As a tie-in to the issue and a special tribute to Pantera’s Dimebag Darrell, Revolver has produced a highly limited-edition commemorative coin in his honor. The coin comes free with the magazine when purchased at Barnes & Noble. Otherwise, it is available with the issue and an antiqued metal coin holder at: www.revolvermag.com/store, where a portion of the sale proceeds will go to the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. To donate, go to www.ronniejamesdio.com.

Like you, we here at Revolver are still mourning the loss of Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. That’s why we included a poster of him and an obituary in the March/April issue, on stands now. Many of the Rev’s peers wanted to weigh in, too, so over the past few weeks, we've been posting their remembrances. Here, Fozzy frontman, WWE wrestler, and Revolver Golden Gods co-host Chris Jericho concludes this series.

“He was a great drummer, but when I saw them live I was also impressed by how much singing he did. He was a great singer. He sang all the high parts. I thought he was as important to Avenged Sevenfold’s vocal sound as Michael Anthony was to Van Halen. Also, I think he was just getting started. It’s such a shame because who knows what would have happened in the future with his playing.”
Many of the Rev’s peers wanted to weigh in, too. So over the coming days, we’ll post remembrances by the Rev’s friends, people he looked up to and artists who looked up to him. Here, Shadows Fall frontman Brian Fair and drummer Jason Bittner share their thoughts.

“The Rev was a truly one of a kind. No one threw it down quite like he did. He will be missed terribly. May he rest in peace,” Fair says. Bittner adds, “He was a good kid, a great drummer, and a fuckin’ funny dude.”
Like you, we here at Revolver are still mourning the loss of Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. That’s why we included a poster of him and an obituary in the March/April issue, on stands now. Many of the Rev’s peers wanted to weigh in, too. So over the coming days, we’ll post remembrances by the Rev’s friends, people he looked up to and artists who looked up to him. Here, Saosin frontman Cove Reber and bassist Chris Sorenson share their thoughts.

“Jimmy was almost as good of a drummer as he was a singer. Most people don’t realize how many of the high notes were actually coming from his pipes behind that drum kit. Avenged Sevenfold are truly unique, and, in our eyes, Jimmy will always be one the best drummers we’ve ever toured with.”
Here, Eighteen Visions bassist Mick Morris shares his thoughts.

“Jimmy was completely natural as a drummer and a performer. The Rev was the Tommy Lee of this generation. I remember back in 2002 when I was playing in Bleeding Through we did a short East Coast/Canadian tour with Avenged Sevenfold. The shows were very small with an awful attendance, but one thing I remember is Jimmy and the rest of the band played like they were in a sold-out arena in front of thousands. They always went for the gold and eventually got it. They’re a true success story of five of the most talented dudes to rock this earth.

"Jimmy was sincere, modest and had a heart of gold. It goes without saying he was born to rock. I am blessed to have called him a friend and to have shared a stage with him.”
“A true inspiration to all drummers out there. I only knew him personally for a short time, but his legacy will live forever. I personally will miss him dearly and so will the whole drumming community.”

“The music world lost a great person and musician with the passing of Jimmy ‘The Rev’ Sullivan. Jimmy brought a stylistic flare to his performance which helped take the band to a very high level at such a young age. I had the honor of touring with him and found Rev to be a very warm and caring individual and one hell of a drummer. His music and fans were the most important things to him and no matter how big he became, he never lost track. We will miss Jimmy and all of his crazy antics. Most of all, we are all richer for knowing him. Rest in Peace.”
