In just seven years, Rock on the Range — America’s premier destination rock festival — has grown to a sold-out, three-night music celebration with more than 50 bands performing this past weekend (Friday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19, at Columbus Crew Stadium in Ohio. More than 105,000 ticket buyers travelled from 49 states (and three countries) for this year’s ROTR, which generated an economic impact of $17 million to the Columbus metro area.

Here’s what some of the 2013 Rock on the Range performers had to say about their participation:

Jonathan Davis of Korn: “The fans at ROTR have always been great to us, but this year…when we stepped out there…with their biggest crowd yet…that s#*? was just sick!! What a rush!”

Corey Taylor of Stone Sour: “Rock On The Range was THE best show we’ve had in years. The energy was insane, the crowd was Bedlam unleashed and the moment was gone all too quickly–we could have played another HOUR haha! It was a long time coming–we were supposed to play there the year Roy had his stroke–but it was so worth the wait, and we can’t wait to do it again!”

Gavin Rossdale of Bush: “We had a brilliant time at Rock On The Range. The crowd was spectacular and I want them at every show we do.”

Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach: “As far as rock festivals in America go, Rock On The Range is #1 in my book. Straight f****n epic! The line ups are always great and the fans are insane. Thank God for Rock On The Range! In my opinion, it’s exactly what rock needs right now, a festival that is fun for both the fans and the bands. Can’t wait to do it again and again and again!!!!!”

A Day To Remember: “The whole show was just really impressive. There aren’t a lot of well-done U.S. festival shows, and this one was handled like one that competes with the best on the planet.”

Murder FM’s first-ever show was opening for The Used, their second was at the legendary Whisky a Go Go on the infamous Sunset Strip in West Hollywood and, by their third gig, they were on tour with Korn. Now, they’ve since toured with Lacuna Coil, played with Black Veil Brides, and are preparing for another tour including a show with Escape the Fate.

In anticipation, the band is premiering the video for their new single, “We the Evil,” right here right now. Michael Carter shot the live portion of the clip in Dallas at The Sound Foundation, a rock school for kids that Murder FM frontman Norman Matthew recently opened. Benny Ontiveros (Paloma Films) shot the location footage in El Paso, Texas. Ontiveros previously directed Murder FM’s two Top-10 European videos, “As Beautiful As You Are” and “Machine Gun Kisses” (as seen in Rock Band 3).

“We’ve waited seven years, and we’re finally bringing the No. 1 most requested band by the fans to Rocklahoma, the one and only Guns N’ Roses! Couple that with the undisputed legacy of Alice In Chains, the unforgettable live spectacle of Korn and the hits of Bush, and we’re in store for a truly legendary weekend,” comments Joe Litvag, executive producer of Rocklahoma for AEG Live.

Rocklahoma is just 45 minutes northeast of Tulsa, in Pryor. The “Catch the Fever” Festival Grounds is a premier destination for a multi-day festival and includes onsite camping with access to restrooms and shower house, a general store for campers, VIP reserved seating, hospitality areas and more.

Established in 2007 as a classic rock destination festival with the motto “life, liberty and the pursuit of rock,” Rocklahoma was revamped in 2010 as organizers teamed with AEG Live to create an event encompassing a much broader mix of classic, current and up-and-coming rock artists. In 2011, a record-breaking crowd of over 35,000 fans turned out for the festival, which raised over $10,000 for the American Red Cross as part of their tornado relief efforts in nearby Joplin, MO. In 2012, a national television audience was able to experience many Rocklahoma band performances in HD when AXS TV aired live coverage of the festival.

Rocklahoma marks the final event of the 2013 World’s Loudest Month. Created in partnership by AEG Live and Right Arm Entertainment, the World’s Loudest Month features the biggest names in rock music performing in five distinct U.S. concert atmospheres: Welcome To Rockville, Carolina Rebellion, Rockfest, Rock On The Range, and Rocklahoma. In 2012, the World’s Loudest Month featured over 100 artists playing for more than 200,000 rock music fans across the country on five consecutive weekends, confirming that rock music is as vital as ever.

Rocklahoma is proud to be sponsored by Bud Light, Hard Rock (presenting the Hard Rock 2nd Stage), Jägermeister, and Monster Energy.

By James Wood

Brian “Head” Welch’s new band, Love and Death, released their debut album, Between Here & Lost, January 22 on Tooth & Nail.

On the melodic, ethereal new disc, the former Korn guitarist is joined by teenage guitar phenom J.R. Bareis, bassist Michael Valentine and drummer Dan Johnson.

The guitar skills that helped define Korn’s sound are clearly evident on Between Here & Lost, but the album also finds Welch shifting into the role of lead vocalist. It is full of melodic elements and catchy choruses, making for a refreshing fit that seems comfortable and natural.

Korn fans can take comfort in the fact that Welch — who abruptly departed the band in 2005 following his conversion to Christianity — seems to have made peace with his former bandmates. After playing a one-off gig with Korn at last year’s Carolina Rebellion festival, plans are in place for Welch to join the band again for a few dates in Germany this summer. In the meantime, Welch is ready to again connect with fans when Love and Death hit the road next month in support of the new album.

I recently spoke with Welch and Bareis about Between Here & Lost and more.

Part 1, Brian “Head” Welch

REVOLVER: How did Love and Death get started?

WELCH: When I left Korn, I did a solo record, which was very personal and experimental. I hired a few guys and went on the road, and a few of them have stayed with me over the years. We’ve all become good friends. Love and Death is really a group effort that shows you what can happen when you let other people in to distribute their gifts on a project.

Let’s talk about some of the songs on the record, notably your unique version of Devo’s “Whip It.”

That’s the coolest, weirdest song from that ’80s era, and this is a fresh version of it. I remember everyone initially thought it was crazy, but when I brought the idea to the studio Jasen [futureusgalleryRauch, producer] looked at me and said, “Dude, this could actually work!” [futureusgallerylaughs]

“By The Way”

I lost a few old friends that I used to be very close with many years ago. One died of a drug overdose and the other died of cancer. This song was inspired by them, and I think it will be personal to anyone who’s ever lost a loved one.

“Fading Away”

I wrote most of the lyrics for this song. Take a look at where we’re at in our age; everything in life just flies by. The truth is, we all die. You have to ask yourself: “What’s my focus on?” Are you living just for this world, or are you looking to the future and the next life? That’s what the song means.

“My Disaster”

This song is about losing everything and finding the strength to go on. I’m talking about “things” and not people. I went through a lot in ’09 where I lost a lot of possessions. Overall, the record as a whole has broad lyrical meaning that people can relate to.

When did you start playing guitar?

I started taking acoustic guitar lessons when I was 10, but I quickly got bored with it and changed over to electric. I kept getting better and better equipment and practiced and played all the time. All the way up until I was 18. That was when I got dumped by my girlfriend and moved to Hollywood with some of the guys that would eventually become Korn. The rest was history.

You were able to reach the pinnacle of success and the rock-star dream with Korn.

True. But if you have all of that and you’re still empty inside, what does it matter? It all means nothing. Everywhere we went, we were able to take whatever we wanted; getting the free alcohol and sometimes free drugs. Wherever we went, there were no laws, and it was killing us. You can call it “fun,” that is until you realize it’s tearing you down, and it tore all of us down.

Do you have any regrets?

Never. Everything is meant to be in life, and I love the person I’ve become. I’m still growing into the person I really want to be in the future. Now that I’ve found myself, it means a lot. I know it’s a gift.

You were recently asked to perform on stage with Korn again. What was it like performing with them as the “new” Brian?

It was exciting. I appreciated just being there, but for different reasons. I could also breathe easier because I’m so much healthier now.

What brings you fulfillment?

My spiritual life and raising my daughter and steering her in the right direction. I also know that the music itself is a gift that I have to give.

Part 2, J.R. Bareis

How did you hook up with Brian?

BAREIS: In 2011, I was trying out for the band Thousand Foot Krutch on YouTube. Around that same time, Brian’s guitar player had to leave his band. Brian had a tour coming up and needed to find someone or else he’d have to cancel the tour. Out of sheer coincidence, his tour manager found my video for the audition through Facebook and showed it to Brian, who then got in contact with me.

What’s funny is at the time, they all thought I was around 19 or 20, but I was only 15 when they called me. So I joined the band and immediately got thrown on my very first tour, and less than a year later, I was asked to write and record music for the new album. We worked with Jasen Rauch, who is an incredible producer and musician. The thing I like most about him is that he’s a perfectionist. He worked hard to make sure everything sounded the best it could be.

Was being a working musician something you’ve always wanted to do?

Definitely. I’ve always wanted to do music for a living. It came a lot faster than I thought it would, but I’m so grateful.

What gear do you prefer?

For amps, I prefer Mesa Boogie. I use a Triple Rectifier, which sounds awesome. It’s got good, tight low-end but also has great high range and is very versatile. For guitars I use PRS. I’ve played a lot of guitars, but they just feel so good to me.

What’s was the biggest challenge for you when you joined the band?

When I first joined, I was under the impression I would have to try and live up to a certain expectation. But after I met Brian and we played and jammed, everything just felt right. He’s such a cool dude and so down to Earth. Now, we’re all like a family.

Any advice you can give to other players?

Just keep at it. I’ve always wanted to be in a band, so I know how hard it is. One thing I suggest (obviously) is using YouTube because it gets your name out there. It was the way Journey found their singer and the way Brian found me. You may not think it, but people are watching.

And it is fittingly gargantuan. Check it out below, and for tickets, VIP packages, and more info, visit RockOnTheRange.com and Facebook.

Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Korn, Bush, Three Days Grace, Stone Sour, Papa Roach, Volbeat, Cheap Trick, Bullet For My Valentine, Lamb Of God, Skillet, A Day To Remember, Buckcherry, Halestorm, Hollywood Undead, Device (with David Draiman), Steel Panther, All That Remains, Asking Alexandria, Sevendust, Sick Puppies, Pop Evil, In Flames, In This Moment, Black Veil Brides, Clutch, The Sword, Ghost, Red, Biffy Clyro, Deuce, Middle Class Rut, Big Wreck, Otherwise, Red Line Chemistry, Oleander, Young Guns, Thousand Foot Krutch, Mindset Evolution, Tracer, Beware Of Darkness, Heaven’s Basement, American Fangs, Love And Death, Gemini Syndrome

“We’re really looking forward to returning to Rock on the Range with a batch of brand new killer Alice tunes to play for everyone!” says Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains.

“Head is back!!,” Korn singer Jonathan Davis comments. “Rock On The Range is going to start it all off!! Get ready, we are going to hit it hard!!”

“Bush are thrilled to be playing Rock On The Range with such great bands,” Bush frontman Gavin Rosdale says. “We look forward to seeing you all out there.”

“This massive lineup has scratched our seven-year itch!” says Gary Spivack, co-executive producer of the event for Right Arm Entertainment. “Getting Soundgarden for their first Ohio play in two decades and having seminal acts Alice in Chains, Korn, Volbeat, and Papa Roach return along with bands new to Rock On The Range that include Smashing Pumpkins and Bush, and everything in between—the spectrum of rock n roll is covered…three days of constant energy. Rock On The Range is truly where rock lives.”

“Our goal with Rock On The Range is to constantly create new and interesting ways to expand the event and give even more value to our fans,” comments Joe Litvag, co-executive producer of the event for AEG Live. “In 2013, we’ve added a comedy tent within the site that will be curated by The Funny Bone comedy club. Having a slate of incredible, up-and-coming comedians to riff on the rock experience will be a great change of pace for the weekend. The site layout is also changing dramatically in 2013 to create better event flow, to add more interactive fan activity to the festival, and to allow even more people to experience the higher caliber of talent on the second stage this year.”

TITLE: Common Courtesy
RELEASE DATE: Spring
When A Day to Remember released their new song, “Violence (Enough Is Enough)” late last year, frontman Jeremy McKinnon granted Revolver the exclusive interview on the track and the band’s forthcoming album. While the song is one of the group’s heaviest ever and, according to McKinnon, the new record will have “more heavier songs than on the past two records together”–which is fine by us, of course–he also adds that the album represents ADTR’s ongoing mission to be “your favorite band. Period. We’re trying to play all of your favorite styles of music and not have to switch CDs because I want to hear a pop-punk song or a hardcore song or an acoustic rock ballad.” Which also sounds find by us.

Alice in Chains
TITLE: TBA
RELEASE DATE: Spring
With 2009′s Black Gives Way to Blue, Alice in Chains pretty much pulled off the impossible: Create a new album 14 years after their last release and seven years after the death of iconic lead singer Layne Staley. As such, Black Gives Way to Blue was named Album of the Year by the Revolver staff and was voted on by the fans to win the same honors at the 2010 Revolver Golden Gods. Singer-guitarist Jerry Cantrell says of the new album, “It’s got all the elements of any record we’ve put out, but it’s unlike any record we’ve put out.” He added, “Basically, it’s the next chapter in the Alice in Chains book.” That chapter was introduced late last year with the release of a new song, “Hollow”–listen to it right here.

Philip Anselmo and the Illegals
TITLE: Walk Through Exits Only
RELEASE DATE: Spring/summer
Preceded by two sampler tracks featured on a split 10″ with Warbeast, titled War of the Gargantuas, which is due out on January 8, Phil Anselmo’s highly anticipated solo album will finally see the light of day this year. Backing him on the record is Houston-based guitarist Mazi Montazeri, of whom Anselmo says, “If Ozzy Osbourne had his Tony Iommi and then found his Randy Rhoads when he went to do his solo stuff, I have found my Randy Rhoads.” The singer promises a “fucking very aggressive record”; we’ve heard the unmastered tracks and they easily outdo the two songs on War of the Gargantuas, delivering a dense, intense mix of extreme music styles–think Deathspell Omega with a hardcore edge and some Pantera groove.

Asking Alexandria
TITLE: TBA
RELEASE DATE: Spring
It has been a few monster-sized years for Asking Alexandria: The band rocked the Revolver Golden Gods in 2011, relocated to LA, opened for Guns N’ Roses, headlined the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour 2012, and pretty much claimed their spot as one of the top young metal outfits on the planet. And it will continue in 2013 as the band will release its third studio album this spring after gracing the cover of Revolver‘s January issue. According to frontman Danny Worsnop, their next album will be “a musical baby of Mötley Crüe and Slipknot.”

They won the “Best Live Band” and “Most Dedicated Fans” awards at the Revolver Golden Gods, they played at Metallica’s Orion Music + More festival, and released the song “Carry On” on Call of Duty: Black Ops II and appeared as characters in the game–you check out their appearance and the song right here.
Behemoth
TITLE: TBA
RELEASE DATE: Fall
Polish extremists Behemoth are hard at work on their 10th full-length, which will be their first since 2009′s Evangelion and the first since frontman Nergal successfully battled leukemia. As of December, Nergal said that his band already had 30-40 minutes worth of new material and was, at the time, demoing it in a rehearsal studio. “I’m really thinking about my record,” he told SkullsNBones.com. “I’m dreaming my record, I’m eating my record, I’m shitting my record… I mean, everything just comes to the same thing: this artistic release that’s gonna take place in the fall next year.”

Black Sabbath
TITLE: 13
RELEASE DATE: June
Over three decades since they released their last album, the original lineup of Black Sabbath—vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward—revealed in 2011 that they are working on an LP of new songs with producer Rick Rubin (Metallica, Slayer, Slipknot). Since then, Ward acrimoniously split with the band (his recording replacement? Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine), and it was revealed that Iommi is battling lymphoma but is forging ahead with the writing process nonetheless. Iron Men, indeed.

Bullet for My Valentine
TITLE: Temper Temper
RELEASE DATE: February 12
Vocalist Matt Tuck spent a portion of 2012 making a record and touring with his side project AxeWound (which also features Liam Cormier of the Cancer Bats). However, in the fall, things seemed to shift in the Bullet for My Valentine direction when the band released a new single, “Temper Temper”–listen to it right here. The group announced that would also be the name of its fourth record, due out early next year.

Carcass
TITLE: TBA
RELEASE DATE: TBA
After months of rumors, it’s officially official: English grind masters Carcass are recording their first new album in 17 years. Original members Jeff Walker (vocals, bass) and Bill Steer (guitar, vocals) are being joined in the studio by Trigger The Bloodshed drummer Dan Wilding and metal super-producer Colin Richardson, who helmed Carcass’ last four albums. The band is financing the recording themselves and then shopping it to labels. “Fans can expect to be shocked,” Walker tells Revolver. “If it wasn’t good, me and Bill wouldn’t have bothered and we certainly wouldn’t be wasting our time or all the money we’ve put into this. I think we have enough good ideas to justify releasing a new album—we’re certainly not doing it because some label has offered us a huge wad of cash!”

Children of Bodom
TITLE: TBA
RELEASE DATE: TBA
Children of Bodom are a band that’s not afraid to have fun–like when they did an entire album of covers by pretty much every artist you could imagine, metal, punk, pop, and otherwise; more impressively, they did it well. Having renewed a partnership with label Nuclear Blast Records, who worked with the band early on, the next thing on the Finnish group’s to-do list is a follow-up to 2011′s Relentless Reckless Forever.

TITLE: TBA
RELEASE DATE: Spring
These spazz-metal maniacs’ last album, 2010′s Option Paralysis, was their first on their own label, Party Smasher Inc., and it earned them the “Best Underground Band” award at the 2010 Revolver Golden Gods. Since then, they’ve toured with Deftones and Mastodon and, later in 2012, the band started seriously working on studio album No. 5. Vocalist Greg Puciato says that the new record represents the band’s “biggest jump since Calculating Infinity to Miss Machine in terms of really getting far, far out into Crazyville.”

Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci said that writing for the prog-metal leaders’ 12th studio album would start following the end of the A Dramatic Turn of Events tour. The band reportedly tested out some new song ideas during soundchecks on that trek, and they plan to reconvene for more serious songwriting work early this year.

Five Finger Death Punch
TITLE: TBA
RELEASE DATE: TBA
As of last fall, Five Finger Death Punch had six to eight new songs in various stages of preparation, according to guitarist Jason Hook. The band was working on material using a new portable studio setup that the group put together in 2011. “The idea behind that is just to keep the creative muscle worked out,” Hook says. “It’s kind of like going to the gym–if you stop for a year, you lose all your strength, and we just want to keep that muscle tight. We’re in the business of making music. Touring is great, but we should always be prepared and always be exercising the creative muscle.”

Godflesh
TITLE: TBA
RELEASE DATE: TBA
When British industrial-metal groundbreakers Godflesh reunited to play shows in 2010, it was great news—more than a few extreme-music fans, including a couple editors at Revolver, were crushed when the band canceled its 2001 U.S. tour and then broke up the following year. (Godflesh played their first American gig in forever at Maryland Death Fest 2012.) But news that main man Justin Broadrick & Co. are working on a new album, 10 years after the release of their swansong, Hymns, well, that’s a whole other level of mind-blowing.

Hatebreed
TITLE: The Divinity of Purpose
RELEASE DATE: January 29
Despite CNN mistakenly labeling them a racist band in the aftermath a white supremacist musician shooting up a Wisconsin Sikh temple, it was otherwise a good year for Hatebreed. It may have seemed like the band members’ side projects were ringing in the end of Korn, with vocalist Jonathan Davis spending a lot of time on his electronic work and guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer focusing on Fear and the Nervous System. However, when Revolver spoke with Munky last year, he said Korn had 15 new songs already and was looking for a producer, adding, “We have a big 2013 planned for our fans, for ourselves, and our families.”

Tool
The rumor mill had Tool’s fifth album coming out last year. Clearly that did not come to pass. So we’re holding out hope that they will finally put out a new album this year—and until they do, we’re prepared to be teased, tortured, and titillated by more rumors and misinformation, much of it doubtlessly spread by Tool themselves.
