Not only did it take the world by storm with its raucous riffs and the pained vocals of Kurt Cobain (whom Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne remembered here) and upset Michael Jackson’s Dangerous for the No. 1 spot on Billboard, but it opened doors for hard rock and heavy music to be more personal.
