I have been in love with this girl for seven years. We have been through many things including my going to prison for over four years. Now we are 2,500 miles apart and will have to be for two years. We talk and text a lot and things are good as can be. We talk of getting married and having a family. My family does not care for her too much though, which makes things harder. Do you think we’ll make it and live happily ever after?
—John

Dear John,
This is clearly a complicated situation. This is what I will say: The opinion of your family is only important for your own reflection. Why do they dislike her? Are they correct or just judging? Those are things for you to think about and form your own opinion about.

On the rest of the issues, there are two ways to look at it. You guys have been together for a long time and have endured many very hard times. That’s heavy. That means you two clearly love each other and have a deep level of dedication. That is definitely something very important and worthy in a relationship that is to last a long time. In these seven years, you guys have not really been “together” that much. As you said, you spent more then half of that time in prison, and now you are a very very long distance apart. Perhaps this is a sign that life does not want you to be together even though you guys keep trying. If seven years later, you seem further apart then ever, then perhaps you were never meant to go the distance, even though you care deeply for each other. From my life experience (and I’ve had some dark ones) love is not enough. There are many factors that are required to allow people to stay together long enough to have a family, be happy, and not separate down the line. Honestly, you cannot check these factors via a long-distance relationship. You need to be around each other a lot and really see if you gel in every day mundane life. Also, long-distance love is more torturous to both parties then pleasurable. Most importantly, love should bring pleasure and fulfillment, instead of pain and emptiness.

With all this said, love is a personal matter of the heart and mind. So think very seriously about all of these things, and decide what is best for both of you. If you really love each other, you would want each other to be happy. Sometimes that means muscling through tough times, and sometimes it means letting go, and letting yourself and the other find their true path.

I am a huge rock-and-roll fan! People always call me and ask who sings this song or whatever, and I always get asked what is the difference between hard rock and heavy metal? How would you answer that question?
—Jameson

Dear Jameson,
First of, your name alone is very rock and roll! To answer your question: Rock and Roll has its roots in blues and jazz. It has vocals that entail singing, for the most part, even though the vocals are often raspy and involve some screaming. There is a lot of groove…and you can dance to it. While I’m not sure exactly where metal started–some will argue it was with Black Sabbath with their spooky heavy riffs and bass tones, others will argue it started with the Beatles version of “Helter Skelter.” Regardless, it’s much heavier, faster, with vocals that are raw, loud, and mostly screaming. The guitars definitely have a thicker sound with solos that are much faster, and the drums are much faster, especially with the double bass. Also, it often has a lot of distortion–the distortion is strong as the overdrive is sustained longer creating a deeper, heavier sound. To me, rock and roll is groovy and Funky, while Metal is brutal, raw, and abrasive. But again–this is my perception.

Juliya, I love your work, first of all. I remember seeing an episode of Uranium when you were in Philly and eating a cheesesteak. I think it’s friggin’ great when a girl is not afraid of good food. So I was wondering, since your appearance is important in your career (I believe so), what other frowned-upon foods do you regularly eat? Examples, hot dogs, donuts, Rocky Mountain Oysters. Thanks!
–Raphael \m/, Denver

Dear Raphael,
It’s actually a major issue for me. Being from Russia and growing up with a chef dad, the most amazing gourmet food was always available to me. When I started working in the entertainment industry, I had to start watching my diet as my Russian body does not voluntarily want to be thin. So while I try to work out a few times a week, and most of the time I eat real clean, I do cheat once a week. My favorite foods: steak and potatoes. In any form. Also Mexican food. Particularly in LA is really magical. I also am rather obsessed with sushi and raw oysters, but that stuff is super healthy. I was not allowed to eat fast food growing up, so I have no interest in hot dogs or fries or chips or anything like that. But homemade hearty food–oh, man!

Juliya, if you could play in any of the Big Four bands, regardless of if you can actually play any of the instruments, which band would you play in, what instrument, and why?? (P.S.: You would be the most gorgeous metal musician ever!)
—Rob

Dear Rob, this is a complicated question–and one that will get many people all pissed off and arguing with me. But here is what I will tell you: They are the Big Four for a reason. Because all four bands have created a unique sound that has changed the face of metal music. So while I can’t pick just one, I will tell you what my preferred role would be in each band.

Slayer: I would definitely do the guitar. It is so chaotic, insane and brutal. And has riffs that are instantly recognizable. Once you hear them, blood just starts boiling!

Megadeth: Vocals. I love Dave’s vocals, because he always sounds so friggin’ bitter. It sounds like he spits those words out with pure hatred!

Metallica: Here I’m torn between vocals and guitar…so I’d do vocals and the lead guitar. James has a very recognizable, iconic voice, and Kirk’s lead-guitar work are pure classic metal. Forever and always. Undisputed.

Anthrax: Bass. It’s fun and funky and just has a great tone. Plus, bass guitarists are sexy. Something about the fingers…

There’s this girl that I pretty much love with all my heart, and she had a really serious relationship about a year ago and can’t get over her ex just yet. She said to me that she really likes me but needs some more time and when she feels right she’ll give me a chance. I took her word for it and promised her that I would wait as long as I had to for her. All the time she’s talking to other guys while I’m turning down girls just for her. I’m really beginning to think she just said that to be nice to me thinking that I would find somebody else. Do you think I’m doing the right thing?
—Tyler

Tyler, there are two things that can be happening here:

1. She really does like you but knows if she gives you a chance, it would be a serious situation again. So she is talking to other guys because it is fun without the pressure of being with someone in a serious relationship again. If this is the case, she will come around.

2. She likes you but not that much. Possibly thinks you are super cute and sweet…but after her heartbreak, it isn’t what she wants. Which means she isn’t crazy about you as much as you are about her…and while she might give you a chance one day, she isn’t really that interested.

The solution for both cases:

You have put it out there that you really care for her. You definitely did the right thing with that. One should always make their feelings known…so the other person can choose how to react. But being that she didn’t respond right away…for you to turn away girls is crazy. You should go about your life. If she is ever “ready” to give you a chance, and you haven’t already found someone awesome, then you can see where the relationship takes you. If she never gives you the chance–because she isn’t that into you, or she meets someone else–then you are just sitting around with growing low self-esteem. Not to mention that you may appear a bit desperate or even weird if you don’t date anyone while waiting around for her.

If she is aware that you want her, when she sees you with someone else, that will be the true test. Either she will give you that chance then, or if she doesn’t…she doesn’t care as much as you need her to, in which case, it would never work anyway. Both parties must be really into each other to make a good healthy and long-term relationship work.
