REVOLVER What is the song “Sin O’ Cism” about?
JEFFREY NOTHING “Sin O’ Cism” is about the struggle to survive in a world greatly divided between the wealthy and everyone else. A story of all the pawns in the world’s military risking life and limb, and the presidents, dictators, and kings with much more pressing issues on their collective plates. Don’t kid yourself because whatever line of work or walk of life you choose, to the powers that be, you amount to nothing more than that name tag, uniform, or the cash you put in that basket every Sunday. From graduation to the grave, all anyone cares about is production. We are all here to feed the machine. Our watered-down news is only the freshest, grade-A propaganda, our prisons are full of society’s dregs that no one cared enough to help become more. We, as a people, breed a new monster with each passing second. Morals are a pleasant disguise for the evil residing in the bowels of hell we call home. This village is too big and our elders turn their heads and let the demons run free. This new Inhumanity.

Why did you want to make a video for this song?
“Sin O’ Cism” is brutal and quick and over in a blink. It’s a thing of beauty in this A.D.D community. It’s a quick sucker punch before we reel you in. The song isn’t window dressing. It’s who this band is. Skinny

had a vision for the song and thanks to good friend and noted flatlander Scott Powell’s ChengaWorld Skate Park, we could create the needed distance between members to give it that scope. I plan to do a couple theatrical videos for the next couple songs, but this one had to be right. No crazy masks or makeup this time, just a maddening rant in full spectrum rage. I believe it’s a quality welcome inside the expanses left in minds free to roam this range.

What did you want to do with the video for the song?
We wanted to say hello, turn heads, and wake the dead… We wanted to show a band in the purest sense of the word. A dirty wall, no extras, no props, just a chip on our shoulders that will never go away. Skinny had the idea and we ran with it and it worked. The video was shot in no time, 15 takes, no nonsense, no bullshit, just some sick motherfuckers with something to say. We are Nothing. We’ll take Nothing… Good luck trying to forget us when we’ve gone away. 2012 isn’t the end it’s a new beginning. Let’s wake this thing called metal up, shake off the dust, and start a new! Nothing’s in! Are you?

What was the video shoot like?
It was fun, big-ass skate park, some good friends. Fifteen takes, no time to waste. It goes quick when everyone’s on the same page. We wanted to prove a point and not do the same thing or make something just to have a video we wanted to portray the intensity of the song without coming across insincere. I mean, sure, the mask worn by Skinny when he shot his parts is kind of a silly mask, but in the song, it feels creepy and twisted like the subject of the song itself. We are promised a lot in life and the reality is it all ends. So free yourselves from whatever it is you call your cage and live!

Were there any misadventures during the shoot?
Yeah, Pat as always ran sound and, like the good soldier he is, he always inspects his gear to insure smooth sailing on set. After about 8 takes in, the song flickers in and out as the playback died. So I got on the mic and said, “Enough already, man. We didn’t pay you to DJ. Knock it off asshole!” LD hit “badum-ching” on the drums. Oh well, fuck it, I never could tell a joke. Guess you had to be there.

Not too surprisingly, Mushroomhead’s trademark sound echoes through most of the first solo album from the band’s frontman, Jeffrey Nothing, as, from the melodic and haunting “Time” to the downright bizarre “Mnemerator,” the singer shows off his remarkable vocal versatility. On the head-thumping first single “Enough” and groovy “Devil,” he even channels the goth-glam croak of Mechanical Animals–era Marilyn Manson. Still, the album can’t avoid the impression that it’s simply Mushroomhead-lite most of the time—which will be fine by hardcore fans of those masked miscreants, but not so good for anyone actually wanting something new. We’re giving you an exclusive early look at what the record holds in store with a stream of one of the tracks from the album, “Deathbed Masquerade.” We also checked in with Nothing to get the low down on the song. Tell us what you think of it in the comments.

REVOLVER What’s this song about?
JEFFREY NOTHING I’m kind of talking about the unfortunate true costs of war and just the struggle to survive. I mean when does one cross the line and how many lives are enough? In positions of ultimate power is it possible to o to the well too many times? Do you ever give away enough meaningless pawns? I have lost a lot of people over time, but nothing could prepare me for the grief my daughter has felt from losing her Uncle at a very young age. And yet so many take their own lives. I’ll never get used to that.

Which part of it did you come up with first?
I had the first verse first and the rest came over time in pieces… during campaign promises these people who rule seem like your new best friend, with promises of the world or at least world peace. We believe wholeheartedly and cast our vows of undying support. Reality, unfortunately, brands us the fools and schools us with its heavy hand; that these are just men lying as we all can and do, wearing whatever collar we choose. That truth can be downright evil and our heroes can crash and burn like all of the rest of us.

Was this an easy song to write or record?
Not really. It was the second song we worked on and the last one to be finished. Some songs write themselves and some back you into a corner. This one rests somewhere in between. Some parts came with time but I kept going back to the feel of that first verse. Recording it was easy once I got the tone and delivery right. After that it was a pleasure because Ryan can match my voice so well and always finds new approaches for me to try.

Why have you decided to record a solo album at this point?
The chance discovery of guitarist Ryan Farrell and just the chance really. Skinny and I always knew we wanted to, but we just never found the perfect situation before now. This has felt like it was meant to be. Ever since I first heard “Burial,” this is the most fun I’ve had recording in a long time, and hopefully it will continue when we start touring behind the album.

How is working on your own music different from doing music with Mushroomhead?
Each band has a different formula. I think it’s good to mix up who you’re creative with, as different people bring different creative ideas to the table.

What sort of feedback have you gotten on this song so far?
Same as the whole project really. Everyone is very receptive to what we’re trying to do here. I feel it’s a sort of Sepultura meets Alice in Chains almost. That feels new and very different. The response so far of the fans I’ve played it for is fantastic and I hope the rest, that are waiting, feel the same. I hope the fans all love this noise, as much as we did making it for you.

Scelestus is the brainchild of ex-Mushroomhead singer J Mann and his former bandmate/current Mushroomhead drummer Steve “Skinny” Felton (who did double duty here, serving as producer as well as skinsman). Joined by guitarist Tommy Church of the Autumn Offering, they make their intentions known with this self-titled debut EP, a 4-song collection of ferocious screams, skittering drums, and burly riffage.

Everything on Scelestus is finely tuned and heavy hitting, from opener “Everything We Hold,” which channels early Sepultura with its tribal intro and roared chorus, to third track “Damn The Deceiver,” which evokes the ever-experimental Mushroomhead with its flamenco-esque acoustic-guitar bridge amid an otherwise thrashy song.

In fact, the biggest failing of Scelestus is simply that, at 4 songs in 25 minutes, it feels like it’s over before it has even really started. The last song on here, “Token,” is also the fastest (the track strongly suggests Lamb of God), and as the pace picks up, it leads the listener to feel as if the music in general is building—and then it all ends abruptly.

To its credit then, Scelestus leaves the listener wanting more—and it’s hard not to believe that a full-length will soon follow. Until then, consider this EP a tantalizing tease. SARAH B. KOENIG

Mushroomhead vocalist Jeffrey Nothing has donned his horror-inspired makeup and costume for nearly two decades. Alongside his seven masked bandmates, Nothing released the band’s harrowing seventh studio album, Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children (Megaforce), last year. Here, Nothing delivers his expert opinion, dishing on his top five horror-movie villains, either masked or just naturally hideous.

Freddy Krueger
“A Nightmare on Elm Street is pure horror. Krueger’s attitude and the fact that he will do whatever he wants makes Robert Englund’s beast magical to me. When he says, ‘Here’s your God’ and cut’s a guy’s fingers off, not much is better than that.”

It
“From the film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, It. Tim Curry is a great actor but what he becomes in the sewer? Creepy shit. Clowns have never really affected me like they do some, but that guy is wrong in all the right ways.”

Leatherface
“From The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Pretty damn evil, whether you think it’s a madman in a mask slaughtering innocents or just preparing dinner for the family. This guy would most likely be on anyone’s Top Five, I’m sure.”

Dr. Satan
“For pure shock value all around, you have to include the Dr. Satan sequence of House of 1000 Corpses. Sadly, I don’t feel the same way for anything Rob Zombie’s done since. But I do have to give a nod to the woman wearing her husband’s face as she’s hit by the truck in The Devil’s Rejects. Otherwise, that movie was kind of sleepy and predictable for me. But those 40 seconds are so stunning!”

The Creeper
“Badass motherfucker all around from the movie Jeepers Creepers, the original and the sequel. Imaginative, raw, and sadistic. Something that’s been missing from a lot of horror villains, prior to and since.”
