Formed in 1994, and featuring members of Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees and The Walkabouts, Seattle supergroup Mad Season released only one album, 1995’s Above, and one live VHS called Live at the Moore before its untimely demise. In April, the band’s legacy was commemorated with a new, deluxe, remastered version of Above containing not just the original LP but the entire audio set from Live at the Moore, bonus tracks including three songs from Mark Lanegan’s tenure as lead singer, and the first commercially available release of Live at the Moore on DVD. “AIC 23,” a new skit posted to Funny or Die, tells the story of Alan Poole McLard, a Film Studies Professor at a community college, who is trying to make a documentary film about Alice in Chains to coincide with the release of their new album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. Without the cooperation of the members of Alice in Chains, McLard does his best to interview other musicians that may, or may not, have influenced AIC throughout the years. The film includes cameos from Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo from Metallica, Unta Gleeben Glabben Globben from Necrobotica, Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart, Donnie “Skeeter” Dollarhide Jr. from the Singing Dollarhides, Mike McCready from Pearl Jam, Nesta Cleveland, Kim Thayil from Soundgarden, Duff McKagan from Guns N’ Roses and Loaded, and others. Projected–the supergroup featuring members of Sevendust, Alter Bridge, and Creed–recently released their debut album, Human, which won Revolver‘s Album of the Week poll last week. Now main man John Connelly, also of Sevendust, selects his personal favorite supergroups.
1. Bad Company “Great songwriting with Paul Rogers voice makes for an awesome combination. Still to this day, Rodgers has one of the best voices in rock. Timeless music.”
2. Temple of the Dog “A great one off from a few of the pioneers of the Seattle scene. Great compilation of music written as a tribute to Andrew Wood.”
3. Foo Fighters “Come on! Anything Dave Grohl touches turns to gold. One of the best songwriters in music today hands down. Always keeping it real. The modern-day Tom Petty really.”
4. A Perfect Circle “In some ways, this band is what I wished Tool might have morphed into. More simple arrangements and simpler songwriting than Tool, which is ironically what put Tool on the map with “Sober.” Awesome songwriting and hooks.”
5. Black Country Communion “Time to go to school! Joe Bonamassa is one of the best guitar players in the game and his side band ain’t too shabby either. Glenn Hughes voice on top of it all makes for some of the coolest music most folks don’t know about.”
