The Wizard of Pilgrim Picks His Five Favorite Albums of the Year

Leading up to the end of the year, Revolver has asked some of our favorite artists to pick their Top Albums of 2012 and tell us why each record rules. Here, The Wizard (pictured left), vocalist-guitarist of the doom-metal band Pilgrim, selects his faves.

5. Cannibal Corpse, Torture
“We are constantly amazed by Cannibal’s ability to get progressively more brutal with each record. This one is no exception. Best track: ‘Followed Home Then Killed.’”

4. Earth, Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II
“As a band, we tend to prefer Earth’s older, rocky material to their newer more mellow and dream-like music, but we worship Dylan Carlson and this record, and its predecessor, can take you to other realms. Best track: ‘Multiplicity of Doors.’”

3. Asphyx, Deathhammer
“CRAWLING THROUGH BARBED WIRE. Enough said. Best track: ‘Minefield.’”

2. Windhand, Windhand
“This may be the heaviest recording of all time. It’s like Garrett took the EQ and just pushed up every slider on every instrument. The bass is so heavy it hurts. Amazing songwriting and beautifully haunting vocal melodies. Best track: ‘Winter Sun.’”

1. Natur, Head of Death
“We waited in dire anticipation for this record to come out, and when it finally did, we were so happy and proud to say, ‘These guys have roots in Rhode Island and they fucking rule. Best track: ‘Decion.’”

Legendary record label Metal Blade Records hosted their 30th Anniversary Label Showcase in Los Angeles on September 15. They celebrated with roster members including Six Feet Under, Cattle Decapitation, Battlecross, Gypsyhawk, and Pilgrim. Our own Stephanie Cabral was there, too, capturing all the action. Notes from the Underground: Pilgrim

When it comes to true doom metal, none come truer than Pilgrim.

One listen of Forsaken Man, the latest demo from the up-and-coming Rhode Island doom metal power trio, and it’s plainly clear: these dudes are out to crush some skulls.

Guitarist and singer Jon Rossi (who also handled bass duties on this recording) riffs and sings with sheer power, while drummer Krolg hammers away without mercy.

“Quest,” the demo’s B-side, keeps the intensity level high with an epic feel and displays not only Rossi’s songwriting abilities but also his prowess as a soulful lead guitarist, and studious Tony Iommi disciple.

Speaking of Black Sabbath (as well as old masters like Count Raven, Candlemass, Electric Wizard, Lord Vicar and Saint Vitus), there aren’t many newer bands out there that are keeping this ancient music alive and well. Fortunately, Pilgrim have landed.
