Review: Queens of the Stone Age – …Like Clockwork

While it was impossible to fault the musicality of Queens of the Stone Age’s last two albums—2005’s Lullabies to Paralyze and 2007’s Era Vulgaris—it was equally impossible to ignore the overripe scent of self-indulgence that hung over both of them. Thankfully, Josh Homme and fellow Queens Troy Van Leeuwen, Dean Fertita, and Michael Shuman have gotten back on beam for the band’s first album in six years, apparently rediscovering the joys of creating robotic, riff-oriented hard-rock songs like “I Sat by the Ocean,” “If I Had a Tail” and “My God Is the Sun,” which exude the band’s intelligence and innate weirdness without ever softening their visceral punch. After releasing a series of crazy animated music videos, Queens of the Stone Age are streaming their whole new album,…Like Clockwork, on iTunes.

The new album features guests such as Elton John, Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner, and Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees.

…Like Clockwork will be released June 4 via Matador Records.

Queens of the Stone Age have released another new music video for a track off their upcoming album, … Like Clockwork.

This time, it’s for a song called “My God Is the Sun,” which starts off like a kick-ass modern surf-rock song (in case any surf bands out there are looking for new ideas). The video, which you can watch below, continues the storyline from the band’s four previously released videos for “I Appear Missing,” “Kalopsia,” “Keep Your Eyes Peeled” and “If I Had a Tail.”

Queens of the Stone Age have released another new music video for a track off their upcoming album, … Like Clockwork.

This time, it’s for a song called “If I Had a Tail,” a live version of which the band began streaming for free last week.

The new animated video, which you can watch below, follows the storyline that began in the (also animated) video for “I Appear Missing,” which the band released on May 6 (and which you can watch here).

Queens of the Stone Age have posted another song from their new album, … Like Clockwork, and you can check out the track — “Keep Your Eyes Peeled” — below.

Note that this isn’t the official studio version of the song. It’s a live version recorded last week when Josh Homme & Co. visited Belgian radio station Studio Brussel in Belgium. We shared two more songs from that live set — “I Sat By the Ocean” and “If I Had a Tail” — last week, and you can hear them here.

…Like Clockwork is slated for a June 4 release in North American, courtesy of Matador Records.

Just a few days after releasing a music video for “I Appear Missing,” a track off their new album, …Like Clockwork, Queens of the Stone Age have posted two more brand-new songs to Soundcloud, and you can check them out below.

Although the songs — “I Sat By The Ocean” and “If I Had A Tail” — are from the new album, the versions streaming below were recorded by Josh Homme and Co. yesterday at a Belgian radio station.

On May 6, Queens of the Stone posted a new animated music video for “I Appear Missing,” a track off their upcoming album, …Like Clockwork.

The album will be released June 4 via Matador Records.

Although the video is three minutes long, the album version of “I Appear Missing” should be a full six minutes, Billboard reports. And if the drumming sounds somewhat familiar, that’s because Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl is behind the kit.

Dave Grohl’s new album, Sound City: Real To Reel, won’t be released until next week, but you can check out one of the tracks, an instrumental called “Mantra,” in the video below.

The video, which was posted to YouTube yesterday, shows Grohl (in drumming mode) in his studio with two members of his Sound City Players ensemble, Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme on bass and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor on keyboards.

Sound City: Real To Reel will be out March 12, courtesy of Roswell Records (Listen to the entire album here). The album is the soundtrack to the Sound City documentary, which is already available. For more information, check out the film’s website, soundcitymovie.com.

Grohl’s Sound City Players will perform at SXSW March 14.
