As we bid farewell to a year full of tragedy, the new issue of Revolver magazine—available on newsstands everywhere on December 21—remembers many of hard rock and metal’s most dearly departed. The cover features a stunning painting by legendary comic-book artist J.G. Jones, acclaimed for his work on Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, as well as for co-creating the series Wanted, which was adapted into a 2008 movie starring Angelina Jolie. Jones depicts Ronnie James Dio, Slipknot’s Paul Gray, Avenged Sevenfold’s the Rev, Type O Negative’s Peter Steele, Pantera’s Dimebag Darrell, Metallica’s Cliff Burton, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Ozzy Osbourne’s Randy Rhoads, Queen’s Freddie Mercury, and Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley rocking together in heaven. The cover painting also appears as a free poster with the issue.
Inside the issue, Revolver remembers the cover artists and many of hard rock and metal’s other fallen heroes via exclusive interviews, including the first with Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, Shawn “Clown” Crahan, Chris Fehn, and Joey Jordison—and Paul Gray’s wife, Brenna—since Paul’s death, and the first with the surviving members of Type O Negative since Peter Steele’s passing. Also interviewed are Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows, Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, Alice in Chains’ Mike Inez, Black Label Society’s Zakk Wylde, Ramones’ Marky Ramone, Melvins’ Buzz Osborne, rapper Ice-T, and more.
As a tie-in to the issue and a special tribute to Pantera’s Dimebag Darrell, Revolver has produced a highly limited-edition commemorative coin in his honor. Avenged Sevenfold's highly personal fifth studio album, Nightmare, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's album chart this week and also No.1 on Billboard's Hard Music, Digital, Internet, and Alternative Album Charts. Its No. 1 debut is the band's highest first-week chart position ever. It sold over 162,500 units in its first week thanks to the band's devoted and rabid fanbase, who consider themselves part of a worldwide A7X family. The fans came out in droves to buy the album and spent the past week exhorting one another to make the band's record No. 1 through Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and fansites. The band's previous album, 2007's Avenged Sevenfold, moved 94,000 in its first week of release.
Nightmare's impressive chart showing has been fueled by the success of its title track. It has enjoyed airplay at Active Rock, Mainstream, and Modern Rock radio stations across the country and was the No. 1 Rock Song on iTunes in the U.S. and the U.K. in its debut week. The band also is currently featured on the cover of a special issue of Revolver Magazine completely devoted to them. Produced by Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem) and mixed by noted engineer Andy Wallace, Nightmare was in the works when the band's beloved drummer, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, passed away. The Los Angeles Times has praised Nightmare's "elegiac power ballads," and called it "the band's most personal effort yet." The issue will be printed with seven different covers (see below), with each band member gracing one cover, plus two group portraits. One of the portraits, featuring band members M. ]]>Like you, we here at Revolver are still mourning the loss of Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. That’s why we included a poster of him and an obituary in the March/April issue, on stands now. Many of the Rev’s peers wanted to weigh in, too, so over the past few weeks, we've been posting their remembrances. Here, Fozzy frontman, WWE wrestler, and Revolver Golden Gods co-host Chris Jericho concludes this series.
“He was a great drummer, but when I saw them live I was also impressed by how much singing he did. He was a great singer. He sang all the high parts. I thought he was as important to Avenged Sevenfold’s vocal sound as Michael Anthony was to Van Halen. Also, I think he was just getting started. It’s such a shame because who knows what would have happened in the future with his playing.”
