On this, their sophomore album and first with new frontman Gage Speas, North Carolina’s To Speak of Wolves blast out sweeping, anthemic metalcore worthy of the band fronted by their drummer Phil Chamberlain’s brother, Spencer: Underoath. These guys have a burlier sound, though, due in large part to Speas’ Sean Ingram-esque bellow on songs like the coruscating “Stand Alone Complex” and the lurching “Broken Birds.” But Speas also owns a sinuous emo croon, which he breaks out on pseudo-ballads such as “A Simple Thought that Changed” and “Oregon.” To Speak of Wolves have indeed found their worth.
REVOLVER What’s the song about?
GAGE SPEAS The song is about the effect my parents’ divorce had on me. But in the end, you can’t let other people’s mistakes affect you.

When did you guys write the song? What was the inspiration?
We wrote this song last in the studio. We felt that the record needed a fast, short, and chaotic opener.

Was this an easy song to write or record?
Vocally, it was really demanding. After we play this song during our set, I’m dead.

What sort of feedback have you gotten on this song so far? What sort of reaction do you want to get from the song?
We played this song on our last tour and kids were going crazy. I hope kids can relate to it and sing along and stage dive!
