Review: Today Is the Day – Pain is a Warning

Steve Austin and his project Today Is the Day, with its ever-morphing lineup, are well known for creating some of the most uncompromisingly hostile, abrasive, and disturbing music ever pressed. For album No. 9, Austin is joined by members of New York City noise-rockers Wetnurse, and the results range from blasters like “Wheelin’” and “The Devil’s Blood,” full of catchy, punkish riffs and animalistic wails, and haunting pseudo-ballads like “Remember to Forget.” It’s all cacophonous and creepy enough for longtime fans and yet streamlined enough that, for perhaps the first time ever, casual listeners might be able to survive the onslaught. Exclusive: Today is the Day Debut New Song “The Devil’s Blood”

Noise-rock stalwarts Today is the Day are releasing their ninth album, Pain is a Warning (Blackmarket), which was produced by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, on August 16. The band formerly included future members of Mastodon in its ranks; today it features members of New York metallers Wetnurse. In anticipation of the record, Today is the Day are unleashing a new song, “The Devil’s Blood,” exclusive right here. REVOLVER What’s “The Devil’s Blood” about?
STEVE AUSTIN It’s an understanding about how hard it is to be a parent, when you are totally broke. Shit is so expensive, and when you have two young sons who are 7 and 10, keeping with the costs of technology is fuckin’ hard. Our society is so driven by marketing for products that are ridiculously priced and, when you can’t even afford heating oil or food, an iPhone or iPod is the equivalent of buying a new car.

Which part of it did you come up with first?
The first section of the song was written first, and it reminded me of the Dead Kennedys. The lyrics for the second section—the “iPhone, iPod, iPad, PS3” part—were the first lyrics written.

Was this an easy song to write or record?
No, it wasn’t easy. It’s a complicated song and getting both the music and vocals delivered right was a pain in the ass. I am pleased with the end result.

What sort of feedback have you gotten on this song so far?
A lot of people relate to it because a lot of people are fucking broke and sick of consumerism.

Tennessee-based noise rock/metal act Today is the Day are currently working on a new album, entitled Pain is a Warning, at Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou’s GodCity Studio in Salem, MA.

Pain is a Warning is the follow-up to 2007′s Axis of Eden and is due out this summer through Black Market Activities. Read drummer Curran Reynolds’ studio blog at this location.

Melvins, Today Is the Day, and Boss Hog to Play AmRep 25th Anniversary Show

Melvins, Boss Hog, Today Is the Day, and more will perform at Amphetamine Reptile's 25th Anniversary bash in Minneapolis on August 28. The venerable noise-rock label, known for extravagant vinyl releases (like Melvins' 7-inch series and TITD's first 7-inch), released its first 7-inch in 1985. To celebrate, they will also include an AmRep art retrospective, featuring a Danial Corrigan photo exhibit and a Guit Art show showcasing 35 artists. The label has also announced that several event-only vinyl releases are in the works. Other bands performing include Hammerhead, the Thrown Ups, God Bullies, Gay Witch Abortion, Vaz, and White Drugs.
