The buzz around LA-based hard-rock outfit Dead Sara is reaching fever pitch approaching the April 10 release of their self-titled debut album and the kick-off of this summer’s Warped Tour, which will feature the band. The group’s music makes us think of what Janis Joplin would sound like if she rose from the dead to front Jane’s Addition. Needless to say, we’re stoked here at Revolver to get to debut one of the songs from Dead Sara’s record, “Timed Blues.” Crank the track below and read what vocalist Emily Armstrong has to say about it..

REVOLVER What’s this song about?
EMILY ARMSTRONG It’s about what other people think are “sins” and are pushing them on you as something bad. But as an individual, it should be up to you to do what you know is good and bad. Otherwise, it creates this fear of not being able to live happily.

Which part of it did you come up with first? What was the inspiration?
The first guitar part and verses I wrote some years ago as a folk song while living with seven others in a two-bedroom apartment, which could have been the beginning of the inspiration. The riff was then played by Siouxsie Medley in a rehearsal, and we all jumped on it and made it what it is now.

Was this an easy song to write or record?
We actually wrote it with Chris playing the guitar–that’s the slide guitar you hear and the more monstrous chorus. We didn’t even add bass ’til the track was recorded. It was a step-by-step process with this song. We didn’t figure it all out overnight, and I like that about this song.

How do you feel the song fits into the album overall?
It has a bit of a different feel from the other songs with folk-type verses and slide guitar. But the choruses are pretty heavy so it works.

What sort of feedback have you gotten on this song so far?
I’ve gotten that it sounds different and it’s some people’s favorite track. I find it a very interesting song with a lot going on–in a good way!
