Here, Jamie Hanks (pictured left), vocalist of the death-metal band I Declare War, selects his faves.

5. Haarp, Husks
“I can pretty much sum this album up in one hour or simply one word. I will meet in the middle and just say take a bong hit, sit back, and doom out. It’s a slow-moving record, but that really is the best part about it. New Orleans breeds yet another heavy-metal band for the ages.”

4. Whitechapel, Whitechapel
“A blistering pace and incredibly heavy leads are setting this band apart in the death-metal world right now. Not to mention the ever-developing range of the singer Phil Bozeman. Dare I say this band is the next career death-metal band? If they keep putting stuff out like this, it’s a lock.”

3. Cannibal Corpse, Torture
“Cannibal Corpse has been writing the same record for close to 20 years, it feels like. The thing is though, it’s a really, REALLY fucking badass record. Difference is this record really pumps up the production and tone a lot. ‘Scourge of Iron’ could be the heaviest song I have ever heard. Ever. For real.”

2. Converge, All We Love We Leave Behind
“Converge does it again. Dark, angry, fast, and uncomfortable are a few words that I can think of to describe this record. If you have had a reason to dislike Converge in the past, give this record a chance. You my be pleasantly surprised by this record. You get a little bit of everything along with a new thrash feel, too. Good record for a rainy day.”

1. Gaza, No Absolutes in Human Suffering
“This without question is my favorite heavy record of the year. Between the relentless pace, tasteful technicality, and bellowing vocals that would make even Death himself shit his robes–this record blends the prefect mix of grind, death metal, and punk. Perfect for someone that doesn’t have their head stuck in the sand.”

Here, Jake Pelzl (pictured left), vocalist of the deathcore band Defiler, selects his faves.

5. Deftones, Koi No Yokan
“The band has almost returned to their heavy roots in a sense, and the grooves on this record are always stuck in my head.

4. Papa Roach, The Connection
“The bands addition of electronics and new soundscapes has breathed fresh life into an already amazing band. Five stars.”

3. Whitechapel, Whitechapel
“I feel like the band is really coming into a sound of their own, and this album has a very high replay value.”

2. Parkway Drive, Atlas
“Atlas shows the Aussie boys continuing their reign at the top of the metalcore world.”

1. Stone Sour, House of Gold & Bones, Part 1
“The textures and sounds on this record are unreal, possibly the best Stone Sour release to date.”

Tennessee-based death metal band Whitechapel have just premiered a new music video for the song “Possibilities Of An Impossible Existence,” off their recent self-titled album. The clip — which was filmed during this year’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour by director Strati Hovartos — can be seen below.

“Collectively, as a band, we all really love this video,” said guitarist Alex Wade. “The guys with the Rockstar media department really did an outstanding job on it. It was shot on Rockstar Mayhem fest this year with a combination of GoPro and DSLR cameras. I feel it gives a more intimate vibe than just a regular performance video. The video is also in black and white, which reminds me of old PANTERA videos, which rules.”

The 2012 edition of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival kicked off in San Bernadino, California, this weekend with the biggest show of its five-year history. Over 26,000 headbanging fans were in attendance to witness Slipknot, Slayer, Motörhead, Anthrax, As I Lay Dying, the Devil Wears Prada, and many more bringing, well, mayhem. Our own Stephanie Cabral was there, too, capturing all the action. Check out her pics below.

Headlining the main stage will be masked metal miscreants Slipknot, on their first U.S. tour since the passing of bassist Paul Gray, alongside thrash-metal titans Slayer. The fest will announce another major special guest on March 5.

Supporting those bands on the main stage will be a rotation, depending on the date, of the Devil Wears Prada, As I Lay Dying, and Asking Alexandria. The Jägermeister Stage will feature a special headline set by Anthrax along with rotating support from Whitechapel, High on Fire, and a Jägermeister Music opener. The bands may vary depending on the market.

The tour will hit 26 cities beginning June 30, and presale tickets are going on sale on April 6.

Corey Taylor of Slipknot says, “You knew we’d be back. Now, you know we’re coming. This will be a tour people will scarcely want to miss. It will definitely be a show to remember. Can’t wait to see the states again from behind a mask.”

Slipknot’s, Clown says, “Slipknot is headlining this summer’s Mayhem festival, and it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve ever felt, sensed, or seen. You miss this; you miss everything. Everyone seems to think that there’s a chance we’re gonna go away. This is the farthest thing from the truth. Stay sic and don’t ever judge us.”

“Mayhem 2012 might just be the last and greatest metal festival before the world ends!! So wreak havoc and go out in style!!” adds Tom Araya of Slayer. While his bandmate, Kerry King, comments, “We can’t wait to get rolling on Mayhem 2012! Been three years since we played it last, and it’s gonna be brutal!!! You can’t go wrong with Slayer and Slipknot, pure fucking mayhem!!!!”

The tour will also feature the Rockstar Metal Mulisha Jump Team on select dates.

Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival is produced by Rockstar Taste of Chaos organizer John Reese, Vans Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman, Live Nation, and Creative Artists Agency. The team has made the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival a standout on the summer concert circuit by following the proven model of using sponsorship to deliver a lower ticket price and an enhanced concert experience. This year sees them joining forces once again with Rockstar Energy Drink as the title sponsor.

“Metal is alive and well in 2012,” says Reese. “The fifth year of Rockstar Mayhem Festival will have a massive lineup that will set heavy music fans ears blazing!”

“Some years it all comes together, from top to bottom and this year’s Rockstar Mayhem lineup is going to bring it!” adds tour producer Kevin Lyman.
