Appice will be joined by “camp counselors” including singer-guitarist Eric Bloom (Blue Öyster Cult), drummer James Kottak (Scorpions), guitarist Eddie Ojeda (Twisted Sister), and renowned shredder Michael Angelo Batio.

To celebrate his new Metal Camp, Appice put together his list of the top six heavy-metal drumming songs of all time:

1. “When The Levee Breaks, ” Led Zeppelin
“I always loved the sleazy, heavy drum groove together with the bluesy harp. Just a really cool song with great production.”

2. “We Rock,” Dio
“When I used to go see my brother play that song–and when I heard it on the album–I was blown away. The tempo was great. Ronnie’s voice, the solo, great arrangement–kickass metal!”

3. “Bark at the Moon,” Ozzy Osbourne
“When I played the song live with Ozzy and was involved with the mix, I loved this song. Great hook idea, and the very visual lyrics by Daisley are awesome. Great bass and guitar, and Ozzy sang the crap out of it. Lots of energy in that one.”

4. “Valley of the Kings,” Blue Murder
“John Sykes is a great songwriter. When I heard the demo of this song, I immediately loved it. I used to listen to the demo just for fun. Then after we actually recorded it, the sound that Bob Rock and Mike Fraser got was amazing. Then I liked it even more!”

5. “In the Still of the Night,” Whitesnake
“A great song again with Sykes as a writer. Real cool arrangement, and very ’70s in approach–except very heavy. I still turn the radio up when it comes on!”

6. “Highway To Hell,” AC/DC
“I always liked the simplicity of that song. And the chorus is infectious. The whole band just sounds so great together, with each instrument jelling perfectly to create this amazing heavy groove. Great production as well.”

Whitesnake, released its 11th new album, Forevermore

Vocalist David Coverdale–whose band, Whitesnake, released its 11th new album, Forevermore, earlier this year–shows no signs of slowing down, despite celebrating his 60th birthday in September. After such a long and esteemed career fronting the aforementioned band and, before that, Deep Purple, Coverdale was a no-brainer for the list of 100 Greatest Living Rock Stars in our 100th issue. When we talked to him for that issue, we decided to ask the singer about his top five onstage (mis)adventures.

Showing Whitesnake
“Many years ago, during the early Whitesnake era, I was performing at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. For some reason, in those faraway, louche days, I never thought about wearing underwear beneath my ever so tight stage pants–‘free-birding’ I believe you freedom-loving Americans call it. Anyway, I split my pants rather convincingly, throwing some overt crotch thrusting, and voila! out pops my wedding tackle, my meat and two vegetables, my bits and pieces. Of course, I didn’t have a change of trousers with me, so I had to be gaffer-taped up. Ouch. I actually made a weekly tabloid gossip page. I think it read, ‘David Coverdale’s audience got more than it bargained for the other evening when suddenly…’ blah, blah, blah. I can’t remember if there was a pic, but my dingle was certainly dangling for all to see.”

Dust Devil
“Back in the Deep Purple days, when we toured the U.S., it was very typical for the audience to throw fab little spliffs of wacky weed onstage as a token of appreciation. I remember the crew actually sweeping the joints up with brooms there was so many. Anyway, at one show, as we came on for the encore, some guy was shouting for me to come and take a toke of his doobie. Wanting to show I was ‘one of the lads,’ I dutifully went over to him and took a big hit. The crowd roared their approval, so I took a bigger hit. Screams of approval, one more with gusto, deafening approval. I thought I was quite the clever sod, until halfway through ‘Highway Star’ and things began to look a bit Dennis Hopper and my legs started to go jelly on me. Apparently, I finished the song but had to be carried offstage. According to reliable witnesses, I spent the rest of the night trying to climb through the exciting patterns in the wallpaper in my hotel room. It wasn’t weed–it was angel dust, horse tranquilizer. Sweet Jaysus. Ahh, such high times.”

Girl Power
“I’m not sure if it was with Deep Purple or Whitesnake, but I was performing in Japan at the Budokan in Tokyo. The security used to be incredibly strict about the crowd staying in their seats, strict to the point of brutal. I was singing away when I saw this young woman step into the aisle and start walking down toward me holding a bouquet of flowers. Oh, oh, I thought, this could mean trouble. Sure enough, a huge security guy started running up the aisle to intercept her. Look out, hon! Only it was the guy who should have looked out–she went through him like a hot knife through butter. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was like something out of a martial arts movie. She laid him out cold, stepped over his crumpled mass, and continued down the aisle, bowed to me, and presented me with the bouquet. I gratefully accepted, shook her hand, and watched her walk back to her seat, skipping over the dazed security guy. We all stood there onstage and applauded her. I’ve never forgotten it. Truly fantastic to witness. She was a tiny little thing, too!”

New Noise
“On a recent U.S. tour we were performing the opening track off the Forevermore album, called ‘Steal Your Heart Away,’ when suddenly I see my son, Jasper, run onstage. It took me a little by surprise, then I realized he actually sang on the recording with me so I very happily gave him the microphone and pushed him to the front of the stage. A true Coverdale, he took off wailing like his dad, the crowd went nuts. Suddenly I hear him scream, ‘Make some fucking noise!’ which is one of my staples, somewhat shocking as he was still only 14 years old at the time, almost 15. The band were cracking up. My wife, Cindy, was in the crowd and she thought it was me screaming, he was fantastic up there. It was one of the most amazing and memorable events that I have ever experienced onstage in almost 40 years as a performer. Unforgettable to have my son up there with me, singing together. And I have the pics in my dressing room to prove it. I’ve had special Forevermore shirts, like mine, made for him for the next time he wants to jam with us!”

California Ka-Bam
“Deep Purple headlined the first California Jam, back in 1974 at the Ontario [futureusgalleryMotor] Speedway in California alongside the Eagles, Black Oak Arkansas, Black Sabbath. I was told there were 200,000 to 250,000 people crammed in the stadium. It was my first experience at such an immense event and it was pretty big even for Purple, even though they were huge at that time. Obviously, we wanted to make it special and the one we turned to for that was our super guitarist Ritchie Blackmore: ‘Mr Fearless.’ It so happened we were touring to promote my first album with the band, Burn, so Ritchie wanted to do something that ‘burned,’ something ‘explosive.’

“The show was filled with moments, of course. If you’ve seen it, you witness Ritchie beheading and spearing an interfering ABC TV camera—quite deservedly, though it did cost us some serious money. But the pyro climax was arranged during the song ‘Highway Star’ when Ritchie goes ’70s freak-out nuts, smashing guitars, etc. Ritchie had instructed his guitar tech, an absolute doll of a guy called Ron Quinton, to load up the explosives in some dummy Marshall speakers next to his real ones. And load them up Ronnie did, God bless him. When they blew up, the power of the explosion almost blew Ritchie clean off the stage, actually singed his clothes and hair. It blew drummer Ian Paice’s glasses off! It was truly amazing. You should check it out on Deep Purple Live in California ’74 DVD. It’s a great example of how over-the-top everything was back then. Major madness and mayhem, all in a day’s work and absolutely unforgettable.”

The event is a communion of songs and stories, where everyone present can tip their glasses to one of the true masters of not only guitar but music as a whole.

“Today marks the seventh year, which still doesn’t seem like a reality to me,” said Rita Haney, longtime girlfriend of Dime and the person who knew him best, in a statement. “Sometimes I think, Boy, this sure is a long-ass tour, but then I focus back in and realize what I’m working on at this moment. And I just have to smile and be thankful for all the amazing people that surround me—thanks to him. I hope everyone enjoys this event as much as we like bringing it to them. It’s nothing more, nothing less, than ‘about a damn good time!’—one of my favorite Dime pastimes and phrases. There are no words to express my thanks to all the artists who make this event special and give ‘us fans’ a night to remember two truly amazing people and the music they created! I am forever at your beckon call, so c’mon out and experience the evening with us. It’s going to be quite magical!!!”

The Key Club Hollywood will play host to all-star jams featuring the vocal talents of Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell, Disturbed’s Dave Draiman, Velvet Revolver and Loaded’s Duff McKagan, System of a Down’s Serj Tankian, Suicidal Tendencies’ Mike Muir, and Sebastian Bach; the guitar of John 5, Anthrax’s Scott Ian, Machine Head’s Phil Demmel, Ratt’s Warren DeMartini, Ben Harper, In This Moment’s Chris Howorth, and Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello; and the rhythms of King’s X’s Doug Pinnick, James LoMenzo, Rob Zombie band member Ginger Fish, Whitesnake’s Brian Tichy and Slipknot’s Joey Jordison, with many more superstars lending their vocal and playing skills to the metal proceedings. The whole shebang being emceed by That Metal Show’s Eddie Trunk and his cohosts, Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson. In addition, kicking off the event will be Kill Devil Hill, featuring the legendary Vinny Appice and former Pantera bassist Rex Brown. Also on deck are Dio Disciples, featuring the great Rudy Sarzo and vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens, with a special appearance by Glenn Hughes.

The entire proceeds from the event benefit the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up & Shout Cancer Fund. Additionally, attendees will be able to land some limited-edition merchandise and purchase Monster Energy cocktail drink specials with 100 percent of the proceeds benefitting the cause as well.

What the Revolver staff has been playing around the office.

What gets us through the work week over here in “Revolver-land,” as Lars Ulrich calls it? Hard rock and heavy metal, of course. (And occasionally something a little softer. Hey, you got a problem with that?!) So every Friday we’re going to be posting some of the albums that our staff has been rocking over the past week. Maybe you’ll find something you like—or at least something to bust on us about.

Brandon Geist
Editor in Chief

Type O Negative, World Coming Down
“Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of Pete Steele’s shocking death. So I’ve been listening to this, one of his band Type O Negative’s best, doomiest, and most under-appreciated albums. Rest in peace, Pete. Love you to death.”

Morbid Angel, Domination
“In anticipation of the forthcoming new album from the greatest Floridian death-metal band of them all (IMHO), their first since reuniting with classic vocalist David Vincent, I dusted off my favorite Morbid Angel record, Domination. Some fans aren’t into the industrial touches and the slower tempos, but as far as I’m concerned, all of these just make the band sound that much more evil. ‘Caesar’s Palace,’ in particular, simply destroys.”

A Pale Horse Named Death, And Hell Will Follow Me
“I have to be honest: I’m still stuck on this album, Week 3 and counting. And as long as the NYC weather continues being this unseasonably cold and gray, I suspect I’ll stick with it.”

Kory Grow
 Senior Editor

Anthrax, Spreading the Disease
“I was cleaning out my shower last weekend, and I cranked this while doing so. Probably my favorite Anthrax record, personally, Spreading the Disease has great thrashers like ‘Madhouse’ and ‘Aftershock’ that inspire extra cleanness.”

Molested, Blod-Draum
“A Norwegian death-metal classic from the mid ’90s. Aside from being one of the heaviest death-metal bands, they used unusual instruments like the mouth harp and violin. It topped my list of True Norwegian Death Metal from a couple of years ago, and I still listen to it often.”

Duff McKagan’s Loaded, The Taking
“Easily the strongest Loaded record so far, The Taking has been in steady rotation on my iPod since I got the promo. It doesn’t sound like any of Duff’s other bands—Guns N’ Roses or Velvet Revolver—but has lots of cool hooks and even a few Alice in Chains–like vocal parts.”

Josh Bernstein
Creative Director

Whitesnake, Slide It In
“David Coverdale’s whirlwind tour of the Revolver offices this week had me digging back into the Whitesnake catalog to enjoy some classics. ‘Slow An’ Easy’ is like a lost track of Zepplin’s Presence.”

Guns N’ Roses, The Spaghetti Incident?
“I don’t care what people say, I love this record and the covers literally match my own personal list of favorite songs. Good to hear Duff sing a few tracks, too. Maybe he’ll dust off one of these tunes at the 2011 Revolver Golden Gods?”

Sleigh Bells, Treats
“OK, so this album isn’t necessarily metal, but it’s written and produced by a guy from Poison the Well. And it also might be the best and most refreshing album I’ve heard in this past year. It really sounds fucking huge.”

Josh Hart
Web Producer

Iggy Pop, A Million in Prizes: The Anthology
“What a fucking range on this guy. Iggy was someone who was always ahead of the times (until the ’80s when he was trying to play catch-up, but we’re not going to talk about those dark times right now), from setting the stage for punk rock to producing wildly experimental albums with David Bowie in Berlin. This anthology had to be two discs and 40-plus songs to even come close to providing a good portrait of Iggy’s storied career.”

Opeth, Blackwater Park
“Is it time for new Opeth now? How about now? Now? What about now? Like a hyperactive child in the backseat of a car on the way to Disney World, I’m getting pretty impatient waiting for Mikael Åkerfeldt to lay another slab of heavy on us. Blackwater Park will have to get me through to the fall, when Opeth’s new album is expected out”

Pain of Salvation, Scarsick
“This is such a weird album, you can’t help but love it. The first two tracks sounds like really heavy additions to The Real Thing-era Faith No More’s catalog.”

Stephen Goggi
Art Director

Piebald, If It Weren’t for Venetian Blinds It Would Be Curtains for Us All
“It’s not funny like ‘HaHa’…”

Metallica, Ride the Lightening
“‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ will always remind me of high school wrestling matches.”

Q + Not U, Power
“They were one of my favorite bands and they always put on good shows. This is a great album.”

Cody Thomas
Editorial Intern

Between the Buried and Me, The Great Misdirect
“I’m covering New England Metal Fest this weekend, so I had to crank BTBAM to prepare. I honestly think this is their best album. Each song is so distinctly awesome in it’s own way. I’m pumped for their set on Day 3 of the fest.”

Opeth, Deliverance
“Day 1 was yesterday, and the lineup was 95 percent metalcore bands, which means I heard a lot of breakdowns. About 10 straight hours of them. I had to put on some prog to put all the metalcore back into perspective. Deliverance is dark, brutal, and gorgeous all at the same time.”

Neurosis, Given to the Rising
“I don’t think I need to say much to justify listening to Neurosis. It’s crazy how they pumped out classic after classic, including this, their latest.”
