When Eyehategod started to tour without singer Mike IX Williams earlier this year due to the vocalist's undisclosed health issues, many fans became concerned as to the status of Williams. Williams' wife, Michelle Maher-Williams, has since released a statement, along with a YouCaring crowdfunding page, revealing that her husband has been suffering from cirrhosis of the liver and that he now urgently needs a liver transplant in order to save his life.

The statement explained:

"As many of you are aware, Michael has been battling health issues for the last 2+ years. What most of you don't know is just how serious it is. Michael is a very private person, and I respected that. Throughout this awful journey, only a handful of people were aware of his situation.

"As much as he hates the idea of asking for help, he needs your support now more than ever and has realized that his friends, family and fans deserve to know exactly what is going on with him and his health.

"I'm aware that there have been plenty of questions and concerns, as well as some grossly inaccurate assumptions, regarding his status. I will post a more detailed account in the near future to help you to understand his struggle a bit better. In the meantime, here's a general overview.

"In December 2014, while on tour with Corrections House, Michael was hospitalized in Texas. The ER doctor told him that his liver was failing and he wouldn't survive another year. He immediately returned to [New Orleans] and consulted with one of the best liver specialists in the country. Although he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver, this doctor gave him the hope and encouragement that he needed to put up the fight of his life.

"Over the next year, thanks to changes in his diet and lifestyle, his liver function continued to improve. He was cleared to travel to Europe in June 2015 with Eyehategod. The day after he got home, he was hospitalized for three weeks. After several more hospital stays, he seemed to stabilize. In April 2016, he was again cleared to tour with Eyehategod. With only a couple of dates left of the tour, he was found unresponsive in his hotel room. He was rushed to the hospital in Kentucky and put on life support. A few days later, ever the fighter, he came out of his coma and was able to breathe on his own. Two weeks later, we returned to New Orleans to consult with his specialists. It was apparent that his liver just wasn't healing quickly enough to provide him with a life of quality. He would need a liver transplant. Thus began our journey to get him on the list. It was not an easy task by any means. He jumped through hoops, slashed red tape, and was subjected to a battery of interviews and tests, both physically and mentally. He consulted with therapists, nutritionists, radiologists, as well as cardiac, liver, kidney and infectious disease specialists, just to name a few. He submitted blood and urine specimens twice weekly.

"On October 10th, 2016, he was admitted to the CCU [Critical Care Unit], vomiting blood. Along with internal bleeding, it was determined that his liver and kidneys were failing. He was placed on life support and dialysis. Through sheer grit and determination, he was eventually able to function on his own. We were told that he would not be leaving the hospital without a new liver. His case was presented before the board and he was approved for the transplant list. He's been hospitalized ever since."

Not only is today the release of Metallica's new studio album, 'Hardwired…to Self-Destruct,' but it's also guitarist Kirk Hammett's 54th birthday! In honor of both of these monumental events, we've compiled a list of six facts about Kirk Hammett to celebrate. Happy Blackened Friday, everyone!

1. He was a founding member of Exodus
Prior to replacing then-Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine, Kirk had been one of the founding members of Bay Area thrash legends Exodus and appeared on their 1982 demo tapes. In fact, he was the one behind the band's namesake as well, naming the band after a Leon Uris novel of the same name.

2. He performed on a track with Carlos Santana
In 2005, renowned guitarist Carlos Santana released his album, 'All That I Am.' Among the guests on this album included Kirk Hammett, who laid down guitar tracks for the song, "Trinity."

3. He was Joe Satriani's last guitar student
Guitar legend Joe Satriani has taught some of the most gifted guitarists in rock and metal such as Steve Vai, Alex Skolnick and of course, Kirk Hammett. After two years of lessons, Kirk went onto join Metallica and Satriani's critically acclaimed album 'Surfing with the Alien' was released. Due to the success of the album, Satch discontinued to teach and went on to pursue his burgeoning solo career in music.

4. He collects horror film paraphernalia
Kirk has an affinity for classic horror and sci-fi films. The horror aficionado has spent years cultivating a "crypt collection" of thriller-related memorabilia, such a masks, posters and even actual props that were used in films. Some of Hammett's collection was first put on display at Metallica's 2012 Orion Festival, which took place in Atlantic City, N.J. As a follow-up in 2014, he hosted his own "Fear FestEvil," a horror and music festival where much of his Crypt Collection was put on display once again. Additionally, just this past fall, some of his memorabilia was displayed at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, M.A. as well.

5. His favorite band is UFO
The shredder cites UFO's 1975 'Force It' album as the one that changed his life. Speaking with Guitar World, he explained, "When it got to the guitar solo, I was just blown away by Michael Schenker's tone, phrasing and technique. By the time the second solo came on with the fastest descending lick I'd ever heard, I was totally hooked! I immediately grabbed the album cover and saw the picture of Schenker playing a Flying V."

6. A shoebox and a speaker were his first ever amp
Kirk's first guitar was a Montgomery Ward catalog special. Being without an amplifier, he got creative and plugged the axe into a 4 inch speaker that he packed into a shoebox.
