Tomorrow, October 8, will mark 20 years since the debut of Marilyn Manson's 'Antichrist Superstar,' the album that rocketed the shock rocker's career into the mainstream. With the launch of the trivial rock opera, the world grew to love, loathe and, most especially, fear the corseted, bible-shredding God of Fuck. While there are dozens of unforgettable Marilyn Manson moments throughout the years, we have compiled a list of the five most shocking moments in the Pale Emperor's career to honor 'Antichrist Superstar's' anniversary.

1. That time he terrified all of "The Beautiful People" the VMAs (1997)
The MTV Video Music Awards have harbored some of the most shocking and bizarre media moments in live mainstream history. It was Marilyn Manson in 1997 who stole the show with a speech that preempted his equally shocking performance of "The Beautiful People." Dressed in fur, Manson marched onto the stage with a mock presidential procession. When he took the stand, he began to preach. "My fellow Americans," he started, "We will no longer be oppressed by the fascism of Christianity and we will no longer be oppressed by the fascism of beauty 'cause I see you all sitting out there trying your hardest not to be ugly, trying your hardest not to fit in, trying your hardest to earn your way into heaven. Well, let me ask you, do you wanna be in a place that's filled with a bunch of ass****?"

2. That time he and then-girlfriend Rose McGowan bared their breasts at the VMAs (1998)
By the time 'Mechanical Animals' rolled around, Manson fans (and haters) believed they had seen it all. That is, until Manson appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards accompanied by then-girlfriend Rose McGowan who bared it all in a chainmail dress that revealed all except her lady parts, which were covered with a black thong. As if the sight of McGowan's bare bosom was enough to drop jaws, Manson performed with an exposed pair of prosthetic breasts during his performance of "The Dope Show," which he had previously donned in the song's official music video as well as on the cover of 'Mechanical Animals.'

3. That time he angered the religious right at Ozzfest (1997)
While the second ever Ozzfest was already buzzing due to the first touring reunion of Black Sabbath in nearly two decades, it was the reaction to the Antichrist Superstar himself that lived in infamy that year. Viewed as a bible shredding thug, Marilyn Manson single-handedly launched Satanic Panic among the religious right of America. There were protests, picket lines, and even bomb scares. Instead of stopping the Antichrist Superstar from taking the stage, these events only fueled the fire, making Manson's performance at the festival a must-see event.

4. That time he smoked human bones (1995)
After completing an interview with High Times in 1995, Manson called the interviewer back to let her know that he had forgotten to mention that he had smoked human bones. "When Twiggy and I were living in New Orleans, we went out one night grave digging, because in New Orleans bones stick out of the ground everywhere," he explained. "You just kind of like pick 'em like strawberries. So we had a big bag of bones that we carried with us on the road. About five months ago in L.A., we were in a hotel room, and there were all these people there we didn't know. We talked them into chipping off pieces of the bones, putting it in a pipe and smoking it. We smoked it too. It was terrible—it smelled like burnt hair, gave you a really bad headache and made your eyes red. Oh yeah, and after that we talked someone else into smoking a Tic Tac."

5. That time he joined Bill Mahr on 'Politically Incorrect' (1997)
In 1997, Manson appeared on Bill Mahr's 'Politically Incorrect' television series alongside an unlikely lineup of Florence Henderson (Carol Brady from 'The Brady Bunch'), musicians/sexual abstinence activist Lakita Garth, and radio host G. Gordon Liddy. Man. Needless to say, Manson's controversial presence ignited much debate about religion and oral sex.

Manson will be releasing a 20th anniversary box set for 'Antichrist Superstar' on October 21.

by Jon Wiederhorn

After almost eight years in limbo, Body Count returned in 2014 with the album 'Manslaughter.' For those who thought the record marked a bold return, founder Ice-T says it was more like a preview for the coming attraction.

"We did that album to test the water to see if there was still a market for our music," says the rocker, rapper and actor. "And it worked. People were excited to see the band, so once we got that foothold we decided to go back out and hit 'em with everything we've got."

Body Count's upcoming record, 'Bloodlust,' is tentatively scheduled for release in early 2017, and will feature a mix of mid-paced metal songs and thrashers that will likely up the ante from the band's previous output. There will be long, doomy intros, multiple rhythm shifts and even a slow, melodic rocker called "This Is Why We Ride."

"It's kind of like a ballad, but not really," Ice-T says. "I could definitely see it getting played on the radio."

But before Body Count entered the studio, Ice-T hired seasoned musicians, including members of Sevendust, to put together song skeletons for the band to work with. Then he, guitarists Ernie C and Juan of the Dead, bassist Vincent Price, drummer Ill Will, and sampler Sean E Sean entered The Platinum Underground in Mesa, Arizona for a month to reshape the ideas into Body Count songs and work on their own material. They left the studio with 15 tracks, including moshpit scorcher "The Purge" and the brooding title track, which is reminiscent of Black Sabbath.

The only snag in the process took place when the band was riding so high on adrenaline, it failed to realize it was recycling ideas. "Making records is a very interesting process," Ice-T explains. "You work really hard on something and finish it and then you'll be like, 'Yo, that sounds like somebody else's record.' Or, 'Hey, didn't we just make that record three days ago?' One time we did two songs in a row and afterwards I looked at them and said, 'Yo, that's the same riff in each song.' So we had to pick one! But in the end we came up with some very aggressive and cool music."

At the end of August, Body Count flew to Jersey City, New Jersey to work with Will Putney (The Amity Affliction, Upon a Burning Body). Before they wrap, they will also record a yet-untitled song Max Cavalera wrote for them, which will also feature guest vocals from the Soulfly frontman. When of the music is recorded, Ice-T will finish writing the lyrics and tracking the vocals.

"I like to start with hot metal tracks that you can listen to without a word on them and go, 'Wow, that was just like fire!'" Ice-T says. "The music tells me what the song is about, and that's when the words start coming to me. Then it's up to me not to fuck it up."

In addition, he says 'Bloodlust' will feature political songs, gang-oriented cuts and horror based numbers that all revolve around the central theme of the title track. "Bloodlust is part of the human makeup. Murder is about as normal as love. It's in our nature to want to get violent and kill, but we know there are consequences. That's why we like violent movies, video games and combat sports. It's in our DNA. It's what we are."

Meshuggah_2.jpg

Meshuggah have debuted the mind-bending new music video "Clockworks," the third single from forthcoming album, 'The Violent Sleep of Reason.' The eighth studio album from the band is out today, October 7, via Nuclear Blast Records. You can purchase or stream the album here.

Speaking with Revolver for our October/November issue, drummer and lyricist Tomas Haake gave insight to the album title. "It's a little weird because it's not the actual sleep that is violent," Haake explained. "To me, 'The Violent Sleep of Reason' is just another way of saying that not responding to what's going on around the world in a proper way will have violent implications and effects. Some scholars have said that we actually already have a World War III, even though people don't see it as such. But if you look at the casualties on a daily basis in armed conflict around the world, it's a lot more than what happened in the two World Wars. That's a pretty scary thought. But we just turn off the news and go back to watching Netflix." Read more from the interview here.

In support of the album, Meshuggah will be embarking on a North American tour with High on Fire. Tour dates are available here.

Attila have dropped their first official music video from forthcoming album, 'Chaos,' which is due November 4 via SharpTone Records. Watch the clip for "Bulletproof" below.

Directed by Frankie Nasso, who has also worked with Parkway Drive and Asking Alexandria, the video shows the band delivering a chaotic performance to a wild crowd. Nasso commented, "I had no idea what to expect before meeting and working with Attila. What I've come to learn is they are one of the most driven and dedicated bands out there today. It was well over 100 degrees when we shot the video down in Tampa. You could literally cook a steak on those metal containers. Those dudes were up nearly two stories high for over eight hours and never complained once."

He continued, "There's a reason why Attila is making so much noise right now. It's because they are relentless and unfuckingstoppable. I know this new album is the start of a very exciting new chapter for them, and I'm proud to be a part of it."

"Bulletproof" is the third single from 'Chaos.' Fans who pre-order the album will be given an instant download of the track. Physical pre-orders of the album include an autographed booklet and a special edition, neon green jewel case. The album can be pre-ordered here and here.

A7X.jpg

Not long after various Reddit users started reporting that they were seeing Avenged Sevenfold's deathbat logo being projected on buildings and billboards across Europe, WWE wrestler/Fozzy frontman Chris Jericho shared a photo via Instagram of one that was spotted in Toronto at the Rogers Centre arena. The post went on to say, "My bro in Toronto sent me this pic of the @avengedsevenfold Deathbat on the side of the @rogerscentre! Either Commisioner Gordon likes metal or something big is going on... #A7XWorldwide." The post can be viewed below.

In conjunction with the mysterious logo sightings, guitarist Zacky Vengeance tweeted "October is a reason to celebrate," further hinting that the band has something coming.

While no logos have yet been spotted in the U.S., it is likely that the band is teasing news to come. Speculation is that the band is rolling out the campaign for either a world tour, their new album, or both. In April of this year, the band released a video that teased a sample of the new music they have been working on, however, there hasn't been any additional news since.

What do you think the band has in store?

If you've spotted the logo anywhere, snap a pic and drop it in the comments along with the location!

Protest-the-Hero_1_0.jpg

Protest the Hero will be issuing the physical release of 'Pacific Myth,' on November 18 via Razor & Tie. 'Pacific Myth' is a collection of six self-released tracks from the band that were previously only available to those who subscribed via Bandcamp. Now, the unique project will be made available on CD and vinyl formats, which can be pre-ordered here.

Speaking of 'Pacific Myth,' the band has stated "'Pacific Myth' was purely an experiment. Normally, we take as much time as we need to write records – lots of which is spent procrastinating. With 'Pacific Myth', we didn't have that luxury – we promised to release 1 song per month on the 15th of each month for 6 months running. What we discovered in writing these tunes was the fact that strict deadlines (even if self-imposed) do not allow for over-thinking – something we are incredibly guilty of on our four existing full length albums. Surprisingly, the constricting time frame lead to some risks in writing we wouldn't have normally taken – or at least some risks we would normally have had the time to identify as "too risky" and then re-worked until we felt safe again. For this reason, it's a totally "go-with-your-gut" record and one we are extremely proud of."

The track listing is as follows:

01 – "Tidal"
02 – "Ragged Tooth"
03 – "Cold Water"
04 – "Cataract"
05 – "Harbinger"
06 – "Caravan"
07 – "Tidal" (instrumental)
08 – "Ragged Tooth" (instrumental)
09 – "Cold Water" (instrumental)
10 – "Cataract" (instrumental)
11 – "Harbinger" (instrumental)
12 – "Caravan" (instrumental)

In addition to sharing the new single, the band has also announced that they will be teaming up with Stumptown Coffee to release their own signature blend, "The Deep." The band explained "We love Duane from Stumptown for so many reasons! He's a rad dude who treats his employees very well, he is a super supportive metalhead, and has been making our favorite coffee in Portland since 1999. Now we have another reason to love him! He is making a custom Red Fang coffee! Wahoo! Time to get jacked up!"
