Anthony Bourdain, celebrity chef, acclaimed author and beloved television host, has died at age 61. CNN confirmed Bourdain's death on Friday (June 8th) and reported the cause of death was suicide. His friend Eric Ripert, a French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room in France where he was working on a future episode of his CNN series Parts Unknown.

"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement. "His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."

Bourdain burst into the public eye with his no-holds-barred 2000 book Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, and since then, had likely become best known as the wry, intrepid, no-bullshit television host of shows like the Food Network's A Cook's Tour, the Travel Channel's Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and CNN's Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.

At his heart, Bourdain was a punk rocker, who seemed to bring a brash, iconoclastic attitude — but also a deep humanity — to everything he did. And as much as he loved great food, he also loved great music. Bourdain frequently nodded to his lifelong passion for punk, hardcore, metal and more, writing about growing up in the NYC CBGB scene of the Seventies, championing the likes of Harley Flanagan, cooking with Queens of the Stone Age on No Reservations and, most recently, featuring System of a Down's Serj Tankian on Parts Unknown, an episode that you can watch below.

He will be missed. R.I.P.
