Metallica bring joy to millions of fans across the globe on a daily basis, but their music has also been used to torture prisoners in Guantanamo Bay. Thanks to the efforts of one Canadian woman, we now know that cougars are more aligned with listeners in the latter camp.
Dee Gallant — who would live up to her surname — was recently walking her Husky dog Murphy down a logging road outside of Duncan, British Columbia, in the Cowichan Valley when, according to an interview with Kenowna News, she felt "like something was watching." After realizing she was looking at a cougar and "not a tree," Gallant noticed that the animal appeared to be stalking her and her canine companion as if they were prey. In the video below, you can see the terrifying creature straight ahead and hear the woman saying "Bad kitty!" in a futile attempt to shake the big cat.
Though her tactics in the video came up short, Gallant stayed quick on her toes and began to play Metallica's "Don't Tread on Me" in order to spook the predator away. "I thought it was the noisiest thing on my phone that would probably scare it," she explains. "That was also the messaged I wanted to convey to the cougar ... As soon as the first notes blared out it ran into the bush."
Once the animal turned sideways, Gallant realized the beast was enormous, "about three meters long from nose to tail," and she quickly left the area with Murphy. She went on to joke that she would love to be able to tell James Hetfield someday that he saved her life — you listening, Papa Het?
