'DOOM Eternal' Brings out Big Guns, Demon Guts in Gory Gameplay Demo

Bethesda reveals terrifying first footage of anticipated sequel to 2016's hellish 'DOOM' reboot

Bethesda revealed the first gameplay footage from DOOM Eternal — their highly-anticipated sequel to 2016's reboot of the iconic first-person shooter franchise — during their keynote address at QuakeCon 2018 today (August 10th).

In their introduction to the 10-minute-plus demo, id Software creative director Hugo Martin and game director Marty Stratton described the game as "pure, unfiltered action FPS experience" about "killing badass demons with big guns in unbelievable places." To that end, the reel certainly doesn't disappoint.

Once again, DOOM Eternal puts players in control of the DOOM Slayer, a gun-toting, demon-murdering antihero hellbent on revenge (no pun intended). The Slayer's got several new skills and weapons up his sleeves, including a new dash mechanic, a grappling hook mod for scaling walls and slicing up baddies and an explosive spear-launcher called the Ballista.

The expanded toolbox will come in quite handy in DOOM Eternal, which features twice as many demons as its predecessor. Some are new, others are old — and thanks to the new "destructible demon" feature, some can be torn into itty-bitty chunks. "We're spending more time and energy than ever before making sure it feels absolutely amazing every time you shoot, punch, kick, slash or otherwise rip and tear one of the demons," Stratton said.

So when will players be able to relish that sweet, destructive afterglow? Given how DOOM Eternal doesn't have even have release date yet, we're guessing it might be a while, but you never know.. What we do know is that one, it'll be out for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch; and two, there will most definitely blood.
