The End of the Ocean

In Revolver'new Dec/Jan 2019 issue — which is on newsstands now and available via our webstore — we explore the theme of "Dreams and Nightmares" with the help of King Diamond, Myrkur, Alex Grey, Robert Englund, City Morgue, Venom Prison and others. Since the topic proved particularly compelling and revealing, we've asked some more of our favorite artists about their dreams and nightmares — including Ohio post-rock act The End of the Ocean. Below, drummer Wes Jackson shares the visions that visit him in sleep, the disastrous dream that came true and why Dave Grohl would be an ideal musical collaborator.

DESCRIBE THE MOST RECENT DREAM YOU HAD.
I kept seeing this person who I know and haven't seen in awhile but I kept calling them a different name. Then was trying to find them and don't think I ever did.

WHAT GIVES YOU NIGHTMARES?
I really enjoy horror and gore in films so it usually isn't that. I suspect it's the junk food I eat late at night before going to bed.

WHAT'S THE MOST TERRIFYING NIGHTMARE YOU'VE EVER HAD?
I think the most terrifying one was actually in the last year and it was that my dad had passed away. As soon as I woke up I called my mom to check in and make sure everything was okay and it was. What a relief.

DO YOU HAVE ANY RECURRING DREAMS OR NIGHTMARES?
I wouldn't say there are any that are recurring but some have similar plots and twist to them, like running for my life or falling down a giant hole, kind of like you do in the Nintendo game Battletoads but without the rappelling line.

HAVE ANY OF YOUR DREAMS OR NIGHTMARES COME TRUE?
The only one that I feel like I remember coming true was when I was like 11 I had gotten this brand new dirt bike and dreamed that I crashed it near this tree in my grandparents field and then like a week or so later I actually crashed it near a tree there. Oh yeah, and I get to play music with some of my best friends so that's also a dream come true!

DO YOU BELIEVE YOUR DREAMS HAVE MEANING? DO THEY HAVE A PURPOSE?
I'm sure in the grand scheme of things they do, I feel that somehow we can tap into them as a part of our active consciousness and maybe see them as a guide or a sign of how our future selves can decide on a reaction or response. You know, all of that hippy dippy we're all connected, energy, cosmos and crystals stuff.

HAVE YOUR DREAMS EVER INSPIRED OR INFLUENCED YOUR MUSIC?
In some ways, yes and no. I know I've came up with ideas from random snippets I've had in dreams. Mostly it's dreams of what not to do so we don't get booed off stage.

WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM MUSICIAN TO COLLABORATE WITH, AND WHY?
That's a very long list but honestly, I'd probably have to say Dave Grohl. Dude shreds every instrument he plays and seems like he'd be super fun to work with. His input to music has basically been around my entire life, so that's pretty rad as well. So, what do ya say Dave?

WHAT'S YOUR DREAM FOR 2019?
I want to be selfish and say that I want our band to blow up and do a bunch of cool things because I do and that would be my greatest dream coming true. But, hopefully people can just start being better to each other and showing more compassion in general because it's a weird time to be alive right now for a lot of us and all we can really do is support each other. And also, go vegan.
