Heilung to Soundtrack New 'Hellblade' Video Game: See Brutal, NSFW Trailer

Band and game-makers both "deeply inspired by nature and history"

Comprised of members hailing from Germany, Norway, and Denmark, Heilung are a experimental folk/industrial group committed to bringing back the forgotten sounds of the Iron Age through rich, stirring songs performed on unusual instruments including swords, shields and human bones. Their approach makes the band — a Revolver favorite — the ideal candidate to work on the next installment of U.K. gaming company Ninja Theory's fantasy series Hellblade, as the trio will be doing to create the soundtrack for Sengua's Saga: Hellblade II

The recently-released trailer for the game utilizes Heilung's stunning chants and growls to stir up an ominous air of battle and strife. Characters adorned with runes and rough-hewn clothing, rendered in tremendous lifelike detail, appear to prepare themselves for an oncoming threat by grabbing torches and donning ceremonial headware as they gather in the face of danger.

"It is with the uttermost joy and deepest respect that we can finally reveal: Heilung is collaborating with Ninja Theory on the soundtrack for Senua's Saga: Hellblade II," the band announced in a joint statement. "From the very first meeting with co-founder & Chief Creative Ninja Tameem, Commercial Director Dominic, and Audio Lead David, we discovered that although we work on very different platforms, the core is very much alike.  Both Heilung and Hellblade are deeply inspired by nature and history, and aim to alter your state of mind.  We are looking very much forward to present this hybrid child, born from a meeting between ancient spirits and the technology of tomorrow."

The trailer above debuted at this year's Game Awards and features the song "In Maidjan" from Heilung's debut full-length Ofnir. It was also announced at the awards that the game is still early in development, so stay tuned for a release schedule and more information.
